(SEE PREVIOUS POSTS/COMMENTS)Impossible for us to "grasp" today..........
Imagine the GREYHOUND veterans, already "well-seasoned", when they first got behind the wheel of an AIR-CONDITIONED "Hound"?
To many such fellows, the very concept of a/c must gave seemed like science fiction to them!
Just imagine the fIRST time a GREYHOUND customer boarded an AIR-CONDITIONED coach, back in the late 1930s/early 1940s!
Recall (I'm talking now of the 743s) the small "half-moon" vent over one of the rear side windows indicated the bus was equipped with a/c.
As the 1930s drew to a close, several builders on intercity coaches were moving towards buses with a/c, indeed, a MOST welcome luxury in the warmer areas of the country...........

Interesting trivia......
According to "BUS STOP CLASSICS", the 1948 ACF-BRILL "C-36" had the distinction of being the first (production model) a/c-equipped transit bus..........

Some interesting info now on the CSS&SB RR's ("South Shore Line") connecting buses...........
From:
SOUTH SHORE: THE LAST INTERURBAN" (William D. Middleton).....
"......In July 1927, the South Shore and the Shore Line Motor Coach Company made a remarkable entry into the long-haul passenger trade with the jointly-operated "Golden Arrow" bus service, which ran once daily in each direction, between Chicago and Detroit....."
".......rail passengers transferred to the buses at South Bend; the buses ran non-stop, with an early-evening arrival in Detroit....."
".......the 8 1/2 hour bus schedule was said to be three hours faster than any other bus service then in operation......"
"......the two buses used were 25-passenger WHITE Model 54 parlor coaches; the buses featured washroom/toilet facilities, interior luggage compartments, and an observation area, also blue and gold upholstered bucket seating......."

An interesting way for an interurban to extend their route. The problem was, Anyone wanting to use a train for part or all of their journey between Chicago and Detroit, also had to option of taking the Michigan Central (NYC System), between those points in about 5 or 6 hours, and in far greater comfort, although probably for a higher fare. By the time I-94 was completed, an all-bus express could match that time, as well. |

A number of interurbans once offered connecting bus services; the C&LE, for example, operated connecting bus service between the interurban station at Springfield, for passengers traveling to Columbus.
The Northern Ohio operated a direct bus service to Youngstown, which, at the time, could only be reached by roundabout interurban rail travel.........

Man, you'll REALLY be a "Legend Of The Road"; you GOTTA get a book out my friend, detailing your many decades in the bus industry....I'll be FIRST in line at the book signing!
Think of all the wonderful (and fascinating) stories that far too many GREYHOUND and TRAILWAYS men took to their graves.
IMHO, I always believed that the dispatchers and starters (especially those at the big terminals) must have been a GOLDMINE of stories (you should know!)

NYO--
While my career in transportation has been a interesting experience for myself, I am afraid that I don't have any really compelling anecdotes that would make it an interesting read for others. It would probably never sell more than a few copies, and be a money-losing endeavor...
But thanks for the compliment! |

You are welcome!
Maybe, then, you get nab a spot on a local cable station, talking about your decades of "working with the buses"; I think it could be an QUITE interesting (and novel!) "human interest" feature!

In this 1973 photo of a MaBSTOA Fishbowl at Columbus Avenue & 65th Street, note the "CONTINENTAL TRAILWAYS" Eagle just leaving the photo on the far right!
Sure was a long, long time ago.................
