Here is the route numbering scheme for the NFTA in Buffalo,NY, about as straightforward a system as any transit system can have:

Routes 1-49, local service routes in and around Buffalo and Erie County.
Routes 50-59 routes serving Niagara Falls, Lockport and within Niagara County.
Routes 60-81 Thruway express variations of local routes in and around Buffalo and Niagara County.
Routes 100-117-School service routes primarily serving the Buffalo City School District, but open to the public.
Routes 200-216 Metrolink routes using minibuses to connect areas not served by regular routes using larger buses with routes that do. Routes by division have already been listed in a previous posting. I just thought the scheme behind the numbering system would be of interest.
