Fellows:

The following is strictly my own personal opinion, but, I truly feel that it is long-overdue to say "farewell" to the MTA, and roll back the clock to before to the 1940 Unification.

Today's MTA just isn't cutting it.

Far too much boondoggling, inept management, and less-than-stellar operations.

To be fair, more than a few other big city transit agencies are also plagued with far too much waste, ineptness, and misguided decisions.

What SHOULD be "The New Order" (and I know this ain't EVER gonna happen, being a man of a realistic turn of mind) would be thus:

Subways (and SIRT) managed by a new private company.

Buses (ditto)

Both the LIRR and MNRR should sever ties with the MTA and both be independently managed by two new private companies.

We are already hearing dire warnings of "A Summer Of Hell", regarding the subways.

Just my 2 1/'2 cents worth.............

Here is an excellent, "in depth" article with a number of interesting photos; much here on rolling stock, signalling, expansion, etc.

Be sure to check the heading dealing with budget cuts and other challenges..........

This just in...........

Just "hoid" that Mr. Demetrius Crichlow has been appointed to the position of "The Man In Charge" (12th President of the MTA) by Janno Lieber; may good luck be with him.....he indeed has one TOUGH uphill battle ahead of him, for certain.......

Further............

It's sure getting interesting around here these days, what with regarding the "Em-Tee-Yay", the future of "CP" (a lot of hot air "bullying" from DC being added into the already heady mix, here) and the ages-old contemplation as to when the Second Avenue "STUBway" will finally be extended to 125th Street?

Will conversion from block-signalling to "See-Bee-Tee-See" be paused, or will continue on at even great speeds (the ever-present "out with the old, in with the new" mentality)

More management shakeups?

More "inner sanctum" dramatics?

Boardroom "follies"?

And with the fares going up later this year to $3.00 (NEVER thought I'd see THAT day!), you can be sure that there are MORE than a few disgruntled "Noo Yawkers".

Yeah, it's getting pretty interesting around these parts, for sure........... Rolling Eyes

.......if only those "higher ups" involved with the Unification way back in 1940 could see the sad state of affairs today.....I do not think they'd be at all pleased. Sad

And with so much inane, back-and-forth political games being played out regarding the hot-button topic of "CP", it's all indeed a heady, insane, hotbed of mismanagement and utter confusion............... Sad

Strange.....

In SOME cities (yes, some efficient transit operations still exist, contrary to popular belief!) mass transit ACTUALLY FUNCTIONS AS INTENDED, to serve the riding public SAFELY, ECONOMICALLY, AND and RELIABLY..........why is it that our "Em-Tee-Yay" can't seem to grasp this ever-elusive concept? Rolling Eyes

Ya gotta wonder, folks............... Rolling Eyes

Why is it..............

That with all this non-stop nonsense currently going on with the "Em-Tee-Yay" and the "gummint", I'm hearing the classic Judy Collins tune, "Send In The Clowns", playing over and over in my head? Rolling Eyes Razz

In all honesty, it's anyone's guess what the latest hijinks will be......... Wink

Funny, I more hear Stealers Wheel's "Stuck In The Middle With You" ("Clowns to the left of me / Jokers to the right . . . ") in my head over all this . . .

W.B.:

Another tune MOST appropriate for what shenanigans are currently taking place with the "Em-Tee-Yay"! Wink

Meanwhile, STILL have "hoid" NOTHING about WHEN (if ever) "woik" will begin to extend the 2nd Avenue "Stubway" up to 125th Street...............it would seem it will be "forever-and-a-day" before the "foist" train pulls into the new 125th Street station.............. Rolling Eyes

That photo of Stan Fischler standing in one of the unfinished sections in his book The Subway . . . says it all, dunnit?

W.B.:

Indeed!

That's where I gleaned that comment from, which, I feel, is even MORE appropriate today (regarding the SAS) than it was back when Mr. Fischler's outstanding "update" of "UPTOWN, DOWNTOWN" was published!Wink

And, to think, back in the late 1940s, the BUDD "R-11s" entered "soivice", supposedly a sign of "things to come", when the new "SAS" was to open, after the venerable "Toid Aven-uh" El came down in '55.......aaahhh, the eternal optimism of it all........... Rolling Eyes

Interesting that all those "new lines that never came to be" all developed after the 1940 unification engineered by La Guardia. Coincidence . . . or what?

W.B.:

A VERY good point to raise..........

Now......what MIGHT have happened, had the "Eye-Are-Tee" and the "Bee-Em-Tee" remained independent from the "Eye-En-Dee".........how much of the proposed "Second System" MIGHT have been built? (after the War)

Recall the proposals for connecting the new "SAS" to the Dyre Avenue line, utilizing the old "Westchester" line.............MIGHT the line have gone beyond its current Dyre Avenue terminal, deeper into former "Westchester" territory?

Think, also, of the IND World's Fair line NOT being ripped up after the Fair closed, but retained, extended, and creating a new rapid transit corridor into Queens.

Today, we can only guess as to what MIGHT have been (of course, "Mr. Moh-ziz" had his own plans for the old IND World's Fair line, plans that did NOT, of course, include rapid transit) Razz
