|
|
The following info (article author Van Wilkins) is from an old issue of "BUS WORLD" magazine, circa-1984.
In 1928, Salt Lake City became the first US city to utilize trolleybuses on major routes.
The new electric coaches were built by:
VERSARE
CINCINNATI
TWIN COACH
These vehicles were built between 1928 and 1930.
By 1944, the pioneer system was taken over by National City Lines; the trolleybuses were replaced by motor buses in 1946........

Thanks, NYO.
That was a pretty short run. I guess it wasn't just streetcars that NCL wanted to get rid of. |

Now, look at Brooklyn's trolleybus network; their first runs were about 1930, and the lines were not converted to diesel buses (new Fishbowls) until 1960.
Oddly enough, NCL, in a strange move, DID, in fact, purchase new postwar trolleybuses for Los Angeles.......go figure!
Note that some of the Salt Lake City trolleybuses were built by VERSARE; a number of these odd-looking buses ran for "SURFACE TRANSPORTATION" in the Bronx, through the 1930s........

Take a gander at the EIGHT-WHEEL BEAST ("the Atwater Street Monster") that once ran in Toronto, in the late 1920s and 1930s!!!!!!

Interesting vehicles. Are they buses, are they streetcars, or are they neither? |

Check out these great photos (rosters, etc) of LA's trolleybuses (note some of the coaches were later sold for further service in Mexico City)

Thanks, NYO.
Yes, LA had a nice trolleybus fleet. But like just about everywhere else, they found a reason to get rid of them. Just at the height of the severe pollution problems in LA, they get rid of their remaining streetcars and trolleybuses and buy more Diesel buses. |
