Cyberider:
GREAT photos of REAL streetcars, and NOT giant insects!
Note the paint scheme on the dashes....reminds me of the San Diego cars.....

NYO:
Phoenix never got PCC's and in the gap in rail transit from 1948 until 2008 went directly from real streetcars to insect-faced caterpillars.
The most comprehensive book, as far as I know, on the Phoenix streetcar system is entitled "Ride a Mile and Smile the While." |

I'd mentioned San Diego; during WW2, the system had an interesting, diverse fleet, as they purchased second-hand cars from TARS and Wilkes-Barre Railways (PA).
Incidentely, last "small town" streetcar system in the US (with PCCs and "standard" cars) was Johnstown (PA), whose cars were replaced by trolleybuses in 1960.................

NYO,
Johnstown certainly had a lot of transit for a small town! It must have been a fascinating place back in the day. |

Cyberider:
A small (but JAM-PACKED WITH PHOTOS!) book you SHOULD GET is from the "Images Of Rail" series:
"JOHNSTOWN TROLLEYS AND INCLINE" (Kenneth C. Springirth)
EXCELLENT photos galore of the oldesr cars, the PCCs, and the trolley buses, as well as the *restored) inclined funicular.
Prior to scrapping, the PCCs were stripped of parts and the parts then shipped to Brussels, for use in their new PCC-inspired tram fleet.
Despite the late date of 1960, only one of the older cars was preserved, double-ender #311.
All the PCCS were scrapped; one PCC (ex-Toronto) which runs in Kenosha, was repainted in the old Johnstown paint.
Thankfully, two of the trolleybuses have been preserrved.......
