When Regional Transit in Rochester started making plans to get the parade of buses off of Main Street in downtown Rochester,NY, they did not figure in Amtrak as part of a true intermodal terminal, along with Trailways and Greyhound. Sure they took Greyhound and Trailways into consideration, but only as an afterthought. Not only that, they overlooked Amtrak completely. Though the present bus terminal at Midtown Plaza is safe for now, thought MUST be given to a true intermodal terminal which includes rail as well as bus. It seems to me that Rochester,NY has been learning all the wrong things from Buffalo, how to miss golden opportunites, how to screw up what should be a genuine intermodal terminal, the largely vacant old Main Post Office on Joseph Avenue near the Amtrak Station could be knocked down and a true intermodal terminal built on the site to take care of RTS, Amtrak, Trailways, and Greyhound and put them all under one roff. RTS route structure is largely based on the hub and spoke set up used by the streetcar system that once operated there. There is very little in the way of a grid pattern due to the way Rochester,NY is laid out. Perhaps some of their planners need to be laid out. This kind of stupidity is what has made the nearby city of Niagara Falls, NY the dump that it is compared to its big brother across the river in Canada. Does Rochester want to become another NIagara Falls,NY? T he time for the Ted Mack Amateur Hour way of doing things is long past and it is time for Rochester to realize this. Besides, the location near the railroad tracks would be perfect to bring trains and buses together. |
