The football Giants also "tore up the turf" at Yankee Stadium I(a), but left at the point of its "renovation" into something almost new. |

Sad indeed that none of the fellows who played for the three "Noo Yawk" teams in '57 are still with us today, long since retired to that big bullpen in the sky.

Hey, Dodgers legend Sandy Koufax is still among the living at 88. Not sure about anyone else. |

X-Astorian:
Sandy Koufax is STILL with us??
WOW!!!
GREAT NEWS indeed for this early AM!
I'm now thinking of, way, way back, how the names of many then-current pro players turned up on television shows; I still recall an early 60's "Dennis The Menace" episode, where, not ONCE, but TWICE, Dennis bats hard and breaks one of Mr. Wilson's windows (the SAME window.....TWICE!)
Dannis later comments on the incident:
"......I'm a regular Willy Mays......."
When baseball fanatic William Frawley, when he was playing "Bub" on "My Three Sons", he would often take young Stanley Livingston ("Chip") to Dodgers Stadium to see the games, buying him Dodgers' pennants and caps, and treat him to hot dogs and sodas.
Interesting, too, that, in "BASEBALL BUGS", the action took place at the Polo Grounds; here again, a West Coast studio chose a "Noo Yawk" location......

There's an interesting (to say the least!) photo out there on the 'net from '62, showing a smiling young Sandy Koufax at a chalkboard, on which is written:
DODGERS-5
METS-0
"NO HITTER"
"JUNE 30, 1962)
(0 for 4)
I guess the early-era Mets fans weren't too happy, on that long ago day........

Yet it was after "El-Lay" moved to Dodger Stadium (what were those attending the games now? traffic dodgers? freeway dodgers? car dodgers? especially in the parking lots near the stadium?), that Mr. Koufax finally came unto his own as a pitcher. That game where he no-hit the Mets was one of the turning points in his career. |

W.B.:
Good points.
HAD the Dodgers been in "El-Yay" in the 1930s/40s/50s, they, themselves COULD easily have been dubbed "Trolley Dodgers", with "El-Ay" crisscrossed with the rails of the "Pee-Ee" (aka the "Red Car") and the LARy (recall, in many areas, the "Red Car" and LARY's yellow cars utilized mixed-gauge trackage)
The last vestiges of the "Red Car" vanished in 1961, with the conversion of the busy Long Beach line ("Metropolitan Coach Lines") had already taken over the famed "Red Car" (that is, what remained of it)
The last LARy streetcar and trolleybus routes were converted in 1963 (by that time, the "Em-Tee-Yay" was operating "Dangerfields" (dubbed "SiverLiners"), "Shermans", and "Jetson" Fishbowls.
I have in my collection a pocket "Em-Tee-Yay" tt ( for Route #28 ) from 3/63, with an artist's rendition of a "Dangerfield" on the front.
The blurb reads:
"NEW SilverLiner SERVICE FOR YOUR COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE".
Perhaps we could called the "Dangerfields" of LA "Koufaxes"?

If so, wouldn't that make the Fishbowls in "El-Lay" "Drysdales"? (As in, fellow Dodger pitcher Don Drysdale.)
Incidentally, a few "Koufax' " on the road had "batwings." Such as:
And its "Drysdale" cousin:

W.B;
I LIKE IT!!!
When the "Em-Tee-Yay" ("El-Ay") was getting ready to order their first "Drysdales" ("Jetsons") a "California" version of the Fishbowl was to have been produced; these were to be designated the TDH-4802 and the TDM-4802.
Though no drawings or plans for these buses are still not to be found, it was thought that this design would have to have included two "40 foot"(82") and two "35" foot (67-inch) side picture windows, as this arrangement would have resulted in an overall length reduction of 30 inches.
More than likely, both smaller windows would have been behind the rear door, as that pattern would have enabled GM to use 35-foot parts for that section.
None of the 4802s were built; GM ended up supplying standard 5301 body shells to all California operators ordering buses that were more than 35-foot.............."

GREAT PHOTOS!!!!!!!!!!!
Now THESE are REAL buses, and NOT "BINOs"
Another moniker for the "Dangerfields" that ran in "El-Ay" could be the "Drysdale Dangerfields"(aka "Koufax")
Man, if we could only go back in time!

And we thought the "Noo Yawk" teams have been mediocre the past two years...........
Just watched Ryan Field (ABC-7)........
The White Sox have now lost TWENTY GAMES in a row!!!!!!!!!!!
They are in fact, on the way to seeing ANOTHER record, one that, indeed, is NOT a favorable one..........

"El-Ay" and the RTS..................
In 1985, Los Angeles placed one of the largest orders for the RTS in 1985, ordering 940 "T8j-204s" (perhaps these buses could be dubbed "Lasordas"?)

The Cubs must be jealous at this point - weren't THEY supposed to be the "lovable losers" in "Shik-aga"? At this rate, the "Cubbies" are pennant contenders in their play in comparison to the Sox, though they too ain't so hot (both are under .500 at this point), but not as "stink up the whole place" bad as the Sox.
Good, bad or indifferent, both teams (the Sox are the "South Siders" and the Cubs the "North Siders") are served by the "See-Tee-Yay's" Red Line (which incorporates the city's first subway, State Street, that opened back in '43) . . . |
