W.B.:

Good point to bring up.

"Shik-aga's" gate cars indeed closely resembled those that ran here in "Noo Yawk".

Big difference was that these cars used coiled tension springs between the cars; here in "Noo Yawk", only the "Aitch & Em's" distinctive "Black" cars were equipped with these.

Too, unlike the "Bee-Are-Tee"/"Bee-Em-Tee", the wooden El cars retained their trolley poles into the 1950s, as certain lines were still using trolley wire on ground-level trackage......

Just thought of this........

Recall after the infamous 1918 Malbone Street wreck, wooden equipment was banned from running in tunnels.

BUT, there WAS an exception.......that long-forgotten part of the 9th Avenue El that ran underground up in "da Bronx?"

Funny that you brought this up.

In the past several years (what with all the insane weather patterns we've been seeing from coast-to-coat on an all-too-regular basis), I recall hearing on the news (several times at least) that "L" service in "Shik-aga" had to be shut down due to the high winds (OK, so the town IS known as the Windy City!)

Of course, back in the days of wooden "L" cars in "Shik-aga" (last retired in 1957), the overall weather, even in the "Windy City", was indeed a BIT more "tame" than it is today............

I think I read those wooden "L" cars that'd been retired in 1957, ran on the State Street and Milwaukee-Dearborn subway lines (now part of the Red and Blue Lines, respectively). This was another way "Shik-aga" was more daredevillish, given how the "Composites" on the "Eye-Are-Tee," after 1916, were "exiled" to the "els," and of course the fallout from the 1918 "Bee-Are-Tee" Malbone Street wreck.

No, Chicago used only 4000s when the State Street subway opened in 1943 (Ravenswood-Englewood/Normal Park and Howard/Evanston-Jackson Park). By the time Dearborn Street began in 1951 6000s were on the scene. Wooden car did not operate in Chicago's subways.

Indeed, wooden cars were NOT used in the State Street subway; ironic, also, in that when the State Street Subway opened, a train of "old" 4000s initiated service (they were, of course, the only steel cars that the "See-Are-Tee" had on the roster at that time)

Here in "Noo Yawk", when the 11th Street connection in Long Island City inaugurated "Bee-Em-Tee" service between the "Eye-En-Dee's Queens Plaza station and the "Bee-Em-Tee's" Lexington Avenue station in 1955, a train of "old" Steels did the honors.

Had this connection opened a bit later, the new "Are-16s" would have been a more appropriate choice for the "first train"; Brighton locals, operating weekdays (between Coney Island and Forest Hills) via the Montaque Street tunnel, provided this service............

Ah. Either misread or something. "See-Are-Tee" must've seen the "Noo Yawk" situation regarding underground tunnels and acted accordingly if, as noted, "Baldies" held down the State Street subway at the outset. (That may explain why there was a little loss of luster to their green-and-cream paint job in that oft-repeated photo of a 4000-series train on one of the "L's" - steel dust?)

W.B.:

Recall, also, that, aside from the 4000-series "sub-series", the "Baldies", no "Shika-ga" cars featured door arrangements following the general pattern of "Noo Yawk's" rolling stock.

The 4000s, equipped with only vestibule doors, always reminded me somewhat of "ME-1's", especially the interior seating layount) but without "center-of-body doors.

Too, the "See-Tee-Yay's" rolling stock, door-wise, seem to be more "in sync" with the cars used on Philly's Market-Frankford El.

Technically, here in "Noo Yawk" , strictly speaking, we have "SUBWAY" cars; back in the days of the old El lines, there was, of course, a HUGE difference between a "SUBWAY" car and an "ELEVATED" car.

In "Shik-aga", the term "rapid transit car" seems to pretty much fit the bill...............

Evidently.

My lone jaunt onto "Shik-aga's" Blue Line would have been on the 2400 series cars.

When Your's Truly visited "Shik-aga" (in both 1977 and again in 1986), I got to ride only the now-classic 6000s.

During BOTH visits the "Skokie Swift" was out due to repair work......... Sad

Were you ever, on your 6000-series rides, on the subway sections (with their "Eye-En-Dee" type track layout*), or only "L's," or both?

* I saw from a 1949 railroad magazine article that "Shik-aga's" "Type II" track layout was a bit different from the "Eye-En-Dee's" - the "Windy City's" State Street subway's half-ties were 30" x 8.5" x 7", vs. our designated 30" x 10" x 6". Yet their track trough was the same as ours - 14" deep from the position of base of rail (0.5" between said base and the wooden half-ties), and 10' 8" wide. They didn't say what the "half tie" length for their third rail positioning was - ours was 46.5".

As always, VERY intricate and detailed "behind the scenes" information.....and ALWAYS interesting to read! Wink

When Your's Truly visited "Shik-aga" in 1978 and 1986, I only rode the 6000s on the "L" trackage (oddly, I did not venture "underground", on either trip)....... Sad

Hmm. So you never rode "Shik-aga's" subways, while I never rode their "L's." Interesting.

Seeing recent videos (including those put up by "See-Tee-Yay," especially their RFW videos of all their lines to and fro), the "Windy City" is another one, besides "Noo Yawk," where "rapid transit cars," despite they too becoming "rolling iPads," actually resemble "rapid transit cars" and not combos of Dust Busters or Dirt Devils and Wurlitzer accordions (or mutated robotic larvae or something). Thank Heaven for small favors . . . I guess . . .

I hear you, friend.

AT LEAST (as high tech as they are) our subway cars LOOK like SUBWAY cars, and not mutant insects, alien spawn, oversized dustbusters, electric eels, and the like (BEWARE of what will soon be coming to "Bah-ston" and "Philly!)

Rapid transit/commuter/main line, Great Britain, Europe, and Asia are now literally infested what I like to refer to as "Le Escargot Electrique!" Shocked Shocked Shocked Razz Razz Razz

Rome's new low-floor LRV's (no more Peter Witts) look like nothing more than evil, human-digesting, giant caterpillars; this goes for most European/Asian rolling stock nowadays.

I'll take "Noo Yawk's" hard-workin' "Brontos" and "Jeterbugs" anyday! Wink

Shouldn't that be, "L'Escargot Electrique"? But other than that little technicality . . . otherwise no argument from me on those points . . . Wink
