The "CITY & SOUTH LONDON Ry" was the first electric underground electric railway in the world; the original trains were hauled by small electric locomotives (one of which is preserved today)

The original coaches, which were indeed quite tiny) were known as "padded cells", do to their lack on windows (small slot-like openings in each coach enabled passengers to see what station they were at)..........

Until 1956, Liverpool's "Overhead Railway" was the only rapid-transit elevated system in Great Britain.

It was also the firsr elevated railway in the world to use automatic signalling, electric color light signals, and MU rolling stock.

A rich and fascinating history, to be sure.............

Until 1900, folks visiting the seaside at Brighton (England) could enjoy a ride on the "world's only sea-going trolley", which looked as though it had been designed by the illustrious Jules Verne himself! Wink

The "tram" carried lifeboats and was manned by a "skipper"!

The rare photos on these page are beyond unusual and thoroughly intriguing.........

And now, a true "oddball" electric single-rail operation in the Bronx, back in the 1900s, indeed quite futuristic for its day..........

Further:

It is also quite interesting to note that this highly-unorthodox "monorail" in the Bronx (see previous post) also had corporate ties to the INTERBOROUGH, TARS, and, also FACCo (Fifth Avenue Coach Company)..........

Germany is home to this unique, fascinating and historic "monorail", which opened for service in 1901 (also note historical photos)

Here's an interesting and fascinating page on the history and development of monorails (there are some fascinating historical images here as well!)

Enjoy! Wink
