Also from the MTA's 1998-1991 Budget Proposal.............

".......the condition and reliability of the bus fleet has shown considerable improvement since 1984. The Equipment Quality Control program, which began in 1985, provides for the daily delivery of clean, reliable buses. Buses in the program are within two groups or levels....."

LEVEL 1:

".....buses which are clean and meet all operating and mechanical requirement, but may have minor body damage, and/or traces of graffiti....."

LEVEL 2:

"........buses which are clean, graffiti free, and meet all operating and mechanical requirements and have no body damage........"

"........adequate, periodic maintenance realizes the industry standard of useful bus life of 12 years....." (I am now thinking of the 25-30 year old antiques I grew up with back in the 1960s, rostered by the old Hudson County "indies"!)

"........in 1987, 620 buses will undergo general overhauls, and mini-overhauls will be performed on 160 others. There will also be 452 and and 419 mini-overhauls on 1982, 1983, and 1985 model RTS buses, by in-house forces and outside contractors....."

In the aforementioned report, there is also a photo of a mechanic working on an (unidentified) bus engine.

The photo caption reads:

"........the Bus Overhaul Program is designed to ensure that older buses realize the industry standard of 12 years of useful life. In 1988, 961 RTS buses will receive general or mini-overhauls....."

Same location in 1974; note that the area between the BMT ramps is now jammed full of trashed Fishbowls, silently awaiting their last runs.......to the scrapper...........

Looks like first-gen "Jetsons" (from the first order of '59); this may explain why you don't see any 1-190 photos on the road after, say, '73. In Manhattan, only Avenue B's roster of buses seemed older than what the "Tee-Yay" had in that borough.

Flatbush & Nostrand, 1978.

Indeed, by this late date, "Jetson" Fishbowl #2023 was already a "veteran"...........

ENY & Fulton, 1981.

Indeed, quite a SHARP contrast between the shiny new "Torpedo" in the foreground, and the veteran "Tee-Yay" green Fishbowl in the background........

No, the ex-FACL #2 - one of the 10 A/C buses they ordered in early '60 - was renumbered 3212 (I don't think this bus had A/C).
