Speaking of Philadelphia.........

Since the 1920s, PSNJ was operating buses into Philly; there were local routes from Camden, as well as long-haul routes from New York and Newark.

Over the years, PS operated a variety of buses into Philadelphia, including Old Looks and Fishbowls, 4104s, 4106s, and "Buffalos".

When the Delaware River Bridge opened, a new bus company, "FIRLIN SHORE LINES" began running buses on a new route (in fact, the company's only route) between Philadelphia and Atlantic city.

In 1929, the RDG began operating hourly bus service between Philadelphia and Atlantic City.

In 1928, when PSNJ began running to both Philadelphia and Atlantic City, they used new YELLOW "Z" types; these buses were known as "camelbacks", as they featured a distinctive roof hump over the center aisle to accommodate passengers as they boarded and debarked..............

Here's a nostalgic 1970s-era photo recalling "BIEBER", back in the day (sharp-looking MCI!) Wink

I also noticed that incorrect photo date as soon as I spotted that 4106; I would assume that the photo was depicting a portion of the TRAILWAYS terminal?

When that 1960's photo was taken, Philly was indeed a mecca for transit fans; bus-wise, PTC was operating Old Looks, Fishbowls, and ACF-BRILLS.

You had the 1920s/1930s BSS cars, the "Almond Joy" Market-Frankford cars, the ancient "Straffords" and "Bullets" out of 68th Street, as well as an interesting variety of "Red Arrow" streetcars and buses!

Too, PTC's PCCs and trolleybuses....PLUS the trains of the PRR and the RDG! (Reading Terminal was then still alive and well!)

And, of course, we had GREYHOUND, TRAILWAYS, PSNJ, as well as other "regional" carriers all adding to the activity.

GREAT memories, indeed, for anyone who was a "local" (or an out-of-town transit buff!) back in the day.............. Wink

Looks like a corner of the lot next to the old Quaker City Bus Co., now Safeway Trails terminal, at 13th and Arch Streets, I believe. Safeway formerly used the "Union Bus Terminal" at 13th and Filbert Streets. When I used to go there between 1967 and 1971, PS was the only carrier still using that terminal. Everyone else was split between the Trailways terminal, and the underground Penn Center Greyhound Terminal at 17th and Market Streets.

Don't forget the Red Arrow Lines (Philadelphia Suburban Transportation Co.), acquisition of the former North Shore 'Electroliner's', now dubbed "Libertyliner's"....
Speaking of Red Arrow...remember when they acquired Bridgeton Transit, and cobbled together a route from Philadelphia to New York? They ran via NJ 70 thru Cherry Hill, NJ, then express from Exit 5 (Westhampton) on the NJTP to the PABT gate 39. They weren't able to match Trailways or Greyhound's running times or frequencies, so gained little to no thru passenger's on that route. It later became Garden State Coachways.
Nowadays, Academy runs express from the Port to Exit 5, then over to Willingboro....
It was interesting to see Red Arrow liveried 'buffaloes' coming into the Port...

Bieber never ran thru service from New York City to Philadelphia, to my knowledge...the closest they came was I believe to Quakertown.

You could do it with a transfer, but too long a trip to attract thru passenger's.
The same with PS...you could do it with a transfer at various points in NJ served by both NY and Philly based routes, but again not likely to attract thru riders.
In the late '60's, there was a curious carrier called "L&W Transportation", that ran a route between New York and North Philadelphia...it ran nonstop over the NJTP- PA Turnpike bridge from NY to Bristol, PA, then local down US 1, and Roosevelt Boulevard to a terminal on North Broad Street. It only ran a single weekday commuter trip, I believe. It later became "Colonial Coach Co.", and was a subsidiary of Hudson Transit (Short Line).
It operated from Gate 46 over on the 'wall' of the Port...

As always, greatly appreciate your input....always educational and great reading! Wink

The former "ELECTROLINERS" were not the only ex-Chicago cars to run on the old "Pig & Whistle" (P&W), today's SEPTA Route #100 Norristown High Speed Line"; to supplement the aging "Bullets" and "Straffords" in the later 1980s, a small group of ex-CTA 6000-series "L" cars went into service between 69th Street and Norristown.

Also, some 1960 "Almond Joy" Market-Frankford cars went to the old P&W, using trucks salvaged from scrapped 1958 PATH (PRR/H&M) "K"-class cars.

In this rare photo from 1964, we see an ex-"ELECTROLINER" awaiting refurbishing at the P&W's 72nd Street yards (note also the rear of the "RED ARROW" bus (ACF-BRILL).........

Ahhh, the sweet nostalgia! Wink

In this timeless 1962 photo, we glimpse a veteran prewar PCC passing by the modern "TRAILWAYS" station at Howard & Fayette in Baltimore (the Baltimore's streetcars, then down to but two lines, would be replaced by a fleet of new a/c Fishbowls in October of 1963).............

This wonderfully nostalgic photo taken at the 69th Street terminal in 1962 vividly recalls those long-ago days of classic "RED ARROW" electric cars and Old Look buses*........... Very Happy

*The sleek new Fishbowl glimpsed between the streetcar and the Old look was indeed the "new kid on the block" when this photo was taken!

This classic, smart-looking GREYHOUND 4104 "bygone America" scene (Pittsburgh) dates to 1956, going by the then-new Jerry Lewis-Dean Martin romp playing at the "TERMINAL" movie house........... Wink
