Given Baltimore's troubles with this setup (as detailed in many a post - both drivers and passengers hate, hate, hating it), it seems the "Em-Tee-Yay" knew something aside from their putting all their eggs in the "Bomber" basket . . . by the time they got around to ordering their first "Are-Tee-Ess's," the bugs were ironed out and the once-Quasimodoesque backside was straightened up.

W.B.:

Ahhh, yes, the "slant back" RTS in Baltimore (in Baltimore-ese, "RTS" might well have stood for "Rolling Transit Saunas")

An older transit friend of mine from Baltimore recounted some interesting stories of the early days of the "Are-Tee-Es" in the Monumental City.

As you and I have both noted in the past, Baltimore's "slant backs" were DESPISED by drivers and passengers alike; passengers were known for letting a new "Are-Tee-Es" pass them by, and would wait for either a Fishbowl or a "Dangerfield"! Shocked

Perhaps, after all, our own "Em-Tee-Yay" was indeed wise for waiting until the bugs were ironed out of the "Torpedoes" before committing themselves to a large order............

And a later "Jetson" at that! (From either 1961 or 1962.) I think I said they were amongst the 1983 retirees (because of no A/C) as more and more "Torpedos" arrived on "Tee-Yay" and " 'stoa" property. When was the latest photo from either side to show a pre-1966 Fishbowl or "Dangerfield"?

W.B.:

One thing I wish about the bus photos at nycsubway.org is that they could be re-grouped/re-classified, to have the photos to listed by year, line, and bus type, as is done for the subway car photos.

This would make searching for photos of a certain type far easier to track down, instead of going only by year.

I have indeed noticed that there are far more early "Torpedo" photos ("stoa") than there are for early "Torpedoes" running on "Tee-Yay" routes.

Just a thought.......

Oldest "Dangerfield" ("Tee-Yay") photo at nycsubway.org dates to 1969, here showing #5008, already sporting the new "M" logo............

Further on nycsubway.org bus photos............

"Stoa" photos depicting "Shermans" only date to 1969/1970 (nothing at all from the early-"stoa" era); even these are in the ultra-minority.

Recall, also, that the MaBSTOA "Shermans" were retired in 1970, three years prior to the retirement of their ex-"Tee-Yay" counterparts.

On the other hand, there are a good number of "Sherman" photos in the "Tee-Yay" photo archives, from from about 1970 through to their 1973 retirement; the majority of "Sherman" photos were taken in Brooklyn and Staten Island

Again, no photos of "Shermans" from the early/mid-1960's, and not one 1960s photo of a "Patton"...............

Again, this is why eBay has been such a treasure trove - and why, if I can, I've brought up photos of such buses overlooked by nycsubway.org.

But nothin's perfetc, as they say . . . Wink I still haven't seen a 1966-69 photo or slide of a 2 Fifth/Madison/Lenox S/B bus in action. I still reckon S/B front signs would have put it as '2 TO 8 ST VIA LENOX.' (It, of course, would be replaced on March 2, 1969 by the 101A, now M102, Third/Lexington/Lenox line - hard to believe it was 55 years already.)

But also . . . of the 1960 FACL and ST "Jetsons," except for one of the A/C's doing duty in Queens, the vast majority were taken betwen 1970 and '73 in "da Bronx" and upper Manhattan. None from when they were brand spanking new and running up and down "tony" Fifth Avenue or (in ST's case) along Broadway and/or 42d Street.

W.B.:

Pinterest also has proven to be a vast online treasure trove of rare vintage bus photos ("Noo Yawk" and elsewhere)

I've long wished to see (at nycsubway.org) photos of "Pattons" in Brooklyn and Staten Island from the 1960's; also early "stoa" photos showing ex-FACL and SURFACE buses still in their original paint.

Too, photos (b/w or color) of FACL and SURFACE "Jetson" Fishbowls, pre-"stoa".

The one photo I found of a "T"-numbered "Sherman" (whose link I posted a couple of weeks ago) came via pinterest.

To date, I've only seen ONE photo dating from 1960 showing a new "Jetson" posing with an about-to-be retired St. Louis-built B&QT trolleybus (this one lone is in the book "NEW YORK TRANSIT MEMORIES")

I can only imagine the hundreds (or more) of such vintage photos in private collections, lurking in closets, basements, attics, or in storage totes.......I know there had to be fans out there snapping pics of the new "Tee-Yay" Fishbowls when they began arriving, heralding the "Jetson Era", as well as photos documenting the last days of both FACL and SURFACE................

There's a Facebook page about the history of MaBSTOA depots / garages:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1414625268790115/

A few photos of both the old buses that were buses, as well as the newer milk cartons, rolling Wurlitzers, Slinkies et al. of today that pass for "buses" - and vintage photos of " 'stoa" garages and rolling stock. Including a B&W photo of one of the last "Shermans" ever produced - #2663 with the front sign box, dated 1959.
