Because Kew Gardens (NY) is my home town and where I spent my most formidable years, I keep track of its current events and the following post at www.oldkewgardens.com caught my eye particularly because the subway station mentioned is unique among the hundreds in New York;

"Notice and Invitation
July 25, 2008

The A.D.A. Elevators at the Kew Gardens/Union Turnpike Subway Station will be dedicated at a ribbon-cutting on Thursday, July 31 at 10:00 A.M. by Lee Sander, Executive Director and CEO, MTA, and Howard Roberts, President, MTA/NYC Transit".

Here's a little more about the IND Kew Gardens Union Turnpike station and how it was built in 1936;

Because the Interboro Parkway (now Jackie Robinson) was to pass under Queens Boulevard exactly where the station was planned with passenger entries from the roadway, a trench of almost sixty feet in depth was dug to accommodate not only the parkway ingress but two stories of subway structure beneath it.

You may be well aware of the platform level at Union Turnpike station, but did you know that there is another full level of tracks below it? These tracks, which are accessible by ramp just south of the station as well as from Continental Avenue, allow subway trains to exit the system to the MTA's Jamaica Yards on the other side of Grand Central Parkway (they also supported a spur to the 39/40 Worlds Fair in Flushing - see below).

In essence, when you cross Queens Boulevard at Union Turnpike, you're driving over the roof of a three story building!

Union Turnpike at Queens Boulevard has become somewhat of a Queens transit hub with no less than five bus lines serving it including Q10, Q37, Q46, Q60 and Q74.

Pictured below and taken in the dead of winter in 1938 is a four car test train on the special spur from Union Turnpike to the soon to be completed World's Fair grounds at Flushing Bay.
