I see why you might say that but Central Park West is two-way and the bus is on a one-way street next to a park and the church at 65th Street is quite different. I was thinking Prospect Park West but I can't find a similar church.

W.B.:

Quick question(s).....

What "Em-Tee-Yay"/MaBSTOA route(s) was the first to have the new buses replace (at least in part) the Fishbowls and/or "Dangerfields"?

What was the first garage to stable a 100% RTS fleet?

Thanks for input....

Given the many photos that we've seen in the course of this discussion, it is clear that the now-vanished Queens independent companies indeed took to the RTS early on, unlike the MTA.

It is also interesting to think that, when the first RTS buses in this country entered revenue service, it had been just a couple of years after the last GM Fishbowls were built in the United States.........

I can say that two of the depots that seemed top-heavy on the first group of RTS's in '81 were 146th Street and Hudson depot, as I saw a lot of them on the M7 and M10 routes from the former, and M11 and M16 from the latter.

I'll leave it to the other experts to answer your last question.

It wouldn't be Brooklyn that I know of because 2263 is from among the buses ordered for MaBSTOA, and 'Tee-Yay' RTS's of this lot would have been within the 1200's to 1300's. But then, some depot assignments have been a bit "way out" over the years, no?

W.B.:

Thanks for this info; it is, of course, more than I had known previously.

BTW:

I will bet the farm that, after the "Borough Bomber" fiasco of the early 1980's, that the Powers That Be at the "Em-Tee-Yay" wished they had gone with the RTS right from the get-go, instead of investing BIG $$$$$$ in the ill-fated GRUMMAN order (837 buses in total)

No wonder that the agency suddenly became QUITE enamored with the RTS, after the GRUMMAN debacle........

From: "RAPID TRANSIT SERIES BUSES" (McCausland).........

"..........Jamaica Bus Lines didn't purchase any Series 06s from GMC, but they did purchase at least one second-hand from Triboro Coach. This bus, #3701, was one of only a handful of Methanol-powered test buses........."

"........it would have carried number 221, but Green Bus Lines chose to let #10,001st carry its number proudly......"

"........New York City had another visitor from GM in the middle of 1980, when a 40', 102" wide RTS visited as a demo....."

The only reason I can see why they went with the "Borough Bombers" in the first place is because of all those "Dangerfields" ordered between 1973 and 1977 - and not a single GM bus since the "custom" Fishbowl orders of 1972-73. Never mind that since the last of the 'Dangerfields' entered service in 1977, Flxible's ownership had changed so.

But yeah, it does underscore that, with rolling stock as well as everything else, the dangers of putting too many eggs (if not all of them) into one basket.

W.B.:

Recall that, for several years after domestic production of the Fishbowl ended, production of Fishbowls continued in Canada.

Imagine had the "Em-Tee-Yay" purchased Canadian-built Fishbowls, instead of "Borough Bombers"?

In "WELCOME ABOARD THE GM NEW LOOK BUS", it says that a number of loyal GM customers in the States continued to order Canadian Fishbowls.

There was mention that one customer was "The Transit Operators Of New York Group, New York City"

Any info on this agency and its purchases?

Further on Canadian Fishbowls in the US.....

In "WELCOME ABOARD THE GM NEW LOOK BUS", there is a color photo (on page 124) of QUEENS TRANSIT Fishbowl #771, on the Avenue of Americas.

According to the caption, this bus was the first of 13 from Montreal, in 1979.

These buses were model T8H-5307A/M001; #771 is signed:

"EXPRESS JEWEL AVE".

Did any of the other independent companies purchase Canadian Fishbowls?

It's possible that was a cooperative of different private companies - Queens Transit being amongst them. This may explain why they later got the Canadian-built "GM Classics" after Fishbowl production north of the border finally ended.

W.B.:

Thanks for the info; much appreciated.

This reminds me of New Jersey's SOMERSET's purchase of four PREVOST "Champions" in 1968.

These four buses were noteworthy in that they were the first Canadian-built transit/suburban coaches purchased by a company in the States......
