Joe (see previous post, also):

This picture dates to 1925; note the distinctive "spider web" design on #8089's dash, informing riders that this is a one-man car........

As in any other big city, the diminutive Birneys indeed looked most out of place, in most of Brooklyn.

They were, clearly, best suited for the most lightly-traveled lines, as well as shuttles.

The first arrived in Brooklyn in 1919; the Birney fleet was built by BRILL and CINCINNATI.

These cars ran on every B&QT shuttle then in operation; they were, interestingly enough, even sometimes tried on the heavier trunk lines, with little success.

The little "Toonervilles" indeed look QUITE out of place in bustling downtown Brooklyn!

By the late 1930's, the Birney fleet had either been sold off or scrapped.

A few, interestingly enough, (as work cars) lasted until the end of streetcar service in 1956.......

Here's a rare photo of Peter Witt #8000, just prior to entering revenue service; note the distinctive and eye-catching "spiderweb" design on the dash, indicating that this was a one-man car........

Here we see Peter Witt #8500 at the Canarsie depot, circa-1938.

Note the lettering on the dash and near the front door: "HAVE EXACT FARE READY"/"PAY AS YOU ENTER".

With no conductor on board, having the exact fare ready was a must.......

Not a complete "must." Until robberies caused transit operators to use locked fareboxes in the early 1960's, operators often made change when the vehicle was in motion. The big problem occurred in July, 1948, when most surface transit in NYC went to seven cents. To the personal changer was added a tall tube for all those extra pennies. And the helpful turnstiles were removed from Brooklyn 1000's and 6000's and also from the buses of Comprehensive in cross-Manhattan routes.

Joe:

Here in New Jersey, by the later 1960's, exact change was becoming more and more commonplace.

In the end, it was only on the suburban buses (PSNJ/DE CAMP/ORANGE & BLACK/MANHATTAN LINES, etc) where the drivers still made change (this was back in the days of the old NCR ticket machines)

PS transit buses, likewise, were also using the NCR ticket machines.

After a BTC (Baltimore) driver was robbed and murdered in the late 1960's (RIP) an exact change policy quickly was implemented.

A sad commentary on the times, for certain....

Here is a rare photo of Peter Witt #8457, sporting what appears to be an experimental (dark red?) paint scheme, at the De Kalb shops......

It took a brutal storm like the infamous '47 blizzard to bring the stalwart streetcars to a halt; this photo was taken at 5th Avenue & 43rd St., and shows a long line of snowbound streetcars.........

The 5100-series were quite interesting cars; these started out as trailers, and, after "trolley train" operations ceased about 1924, the cars were stored for a number of years.

Later, the cars were rebuilt as front-entrance motor cars; the offside center entrance doors were sealed off, and seats installed where the stepwell had been located.

A new entrance was cut into the front of the car bodies, opposite the motorman.

Old-time motormen often referred to these tough-looking cars as "Bulldogs" and "Muzzle Loaders"......

The 4100-series convertibles were later rebuilt for one-man, single-end operation.

Folding doors were cut into the now-enclosed front platforms; these distinctive cars were retired sometime after WW2.............

If one comes across old photos of PCC's crossing the Williamsburgh Bridge, that photo indeed depicts a fan trip in progress.

None of the lines that crossed over the bridge to the underground station at Delancey Street ever operated PCC's; if you were waiting for your car to arrive at this multi-loop terminal, and glimpsed a PCC, you were seeing a chartered car on a fan trip, and not in revenue service...........

This photo was taken in 1954, the same year that the double-ended 8000-series Peter Witts were retired; this interior view of an 8000-series car looks foward towards the motorman's area.

Note the wooden seats, the Johnson fare box, and the subway-style standee straps.......
