The last day of DeCamp commuter services will April 7th, 2023. The company will continue to provide shuttle, charter, and casino services.

Wow…sad to see such a service institution come to an end. But without continued subsidies, can understand it.
Wonder if NJT, or anyone else will attempt serving any of their routes?

Fellows:

I just came across this topic; to say I am TRULY and DEEPLY saddened by this news is indeed an understatement.

Though it has been nearly 43 years since I've ridden DE CAMP, the company's buses and I go back well over 60 years.

Mom and I frequently rode the long-defunct #22 (JSQ-Caldwell) out to Verona, to visit my aunt, uncle, and cousins.

When my folks and I lived in West Orange between 1971 and 1974, we often rode DE CAMP into New York, and, also, the #22 to Journal Square, when "going in" to visit my brother and his family, then living in in Union City.

How I loved those beautiful, handsome, smartly-attired Old Looks and ACF-BRILLs as a young lad!

In the early years of her career, the lovely Miss Connie Francis frequently rode the #33 from her Belleville home into the "Port-of-Authority".

To say I am both shocked and, at the same time, not all that surprised all that much (on the news of DE CAMP's ending commuter service is putting it mildly.

Man, I simply had NO IDEA of this until I just came across this topic, just a little while ago.

Wondering now if either NJT or, perhaps, COACH USA might operate any of the former DE CAMP routes?

Yet another era in New Jersey's once-colorful and diverse bus industry is now relegated to the history books.............RIP, De Camp's commuter routes, you, indeed will be missed...... Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Here is a rare 1974 photo showing an ex-DE CAMP Old Look near the PABT, after being sold to another operator.

Note the bus is no longer carrying the stylish "DE CAMP" lettering over the windows, and, also, the blank destination sign.

How many great memories I have of Mom and I eiding DE CAMP Old Looks and BRILLS on the old #22, out of Journal Square, 60-odd years ago! Wink

I have in my tt collection a "pocket" schedule for DE CAMP's #55 (1964)

The line connected New York with:

BLOOMFIELD

BELLEVILLE

NO. ARLINGTON

KEARNY

(One way fare between Belleville and the "Port-of-Authority: 80 cents!)

Tickets were to be purchased before boarding at Windows 19-23.

Buses on this line departed Platform #72.

NY telephone:

LOngacre 4-8484

From a 1978 issue of "MOTOR COACH AGE"......

"........in January, 1975, De Camp Bus Lines became a participant in the subsidy program. The company was paid $500,000 between January and June......"

"........State auditors challenged the stated operating losses on the intrastate services and determined that approximately one-third of the subsidy had been misappropriated. Unhappy with the lack of guidelines, and with the administration of the subsidy program, De Camp decided to pull out....."

".....early in 1976, De Camp petitioned to abandon intrastate Routes #22, #145, and #146, with the operating rights on the #145 and #146 proposed to be transferred to Arrow Stages in Clifton........"

DE CAMP fleet downsizing.....

Now that DE CAMP has (sadly) abandoned all commuter service into New York, it would seem that fleet downsizing is a reasonable assumption.

I wonder if NJT or COACH USA might be interested in purchasing some of DE CAMP's fleet (or, perhaps, other buyers might step forward) to purchase some of the buses, now that commuter operations have vanished into history......

From "MOTOR COACH AGE".......

".....after the six-week strike of 1976, fleet size was already declining......"

".......petitions to abandon the intrastate routes were denied, but De Camp failed to resume their operations after the strike was settled. They were ordered restored by state Superior Court, but, shortly after this was done, a new timetable was issued, that eliminated service west of Livingston on the #145 and the #146 during midday hours.........."

".......early in 1977, De Camp returned a portion of its 1975 subsidy payment to the state, and a new sibsidy contract was signed......"

"......the recent peak year for De Camp was 1974, when about 4,150,000 passengers were carried interstate, and 890,000 intrastate. Local routes are in a steady decline; interstate routes are not expanding, and, in some cases, are operating marginally....."

In 1956, DE CAMP took over "ATLANTIC TRANSPORTATION" ("GARDEN STATE LINES"; in doing so, they not only added more ACF-BRILL C-44's to their roster, but also, a number of WHITES.

Here is a WHITE at the Clifton garage (note the BRILLS inside the garage), after being repainted in DE CAMP colors............

Here is one of DE CAMP's handsome (and TOUGH!) ACF-BRILL C-44's.

60-something years ago, Mom and I often rode these same buses (Route #22) out to visit relatives who then lived West Orange (we'd get off the bus on Bloomfield Avenue in Verona)

These distinctive buses even SOUNDED tough!!!!!! Shocked

In this long-ago scene, we see DE CAMP Fishbowl #403 proudly displaying the last paint scheme worn by the Fishbowls in the fleet.......
