And that 'Em-Tee-Yay' decal on top near the front is why the distinctive scripts for 'Tee-Yay' and MaBSTOA livery as over standee windows all but disappeared from the scene in terms of newer buses. This order, of course, was the very last with the green scheme.

The various yards and shops had their own terminologies: "Protestant" for R-26/28 and R-27/30, and "Catholic" for R-32's thru R-42's. It referred to the type of "married pair" couplings the subways ran.

W.B,:

Recall, for decades, "married pairs" simply did not exist on either the NY subways or the H&M.

Recall the many hundreds....thousands....of cars over the years that were indeed double-ended, with controls and cabs at both ends.

When PATH took delivery of the new "PA" cars in late 1965, the new single-ended cab cars were referred to as "A" cars, while the cars which had both ends "blind" were referred to as "C" cars.

All of the "Black" cars were single units......

W.B.:

While on the subject of "married pairs", etc, mention should be made of the BMT's "home-built" elevated units, the "C"-types.

Rebuilt from elderly wooden gate cars, each "C" unit was comprised of three cars, a trailer flanked by two motor cars.

The units had the look of an articulated set, but, unlike true articulateds like the "D"-Type Triplex, they were but semi-permanently coupled, with the enclosed passageways between units giving the impression of an articulated trainset.

These distinctive "trains" had sliding doors that were hung on the outside of the car bodies; the only other rapid transit cars in New York to have outside hung doors were the IRT's MUDC cars, themselves rebuilt from older gate cars.

They were familiar sights on the old Fulton El until the line was closed in the mid-1950's......

In this bygone scene at the sprawling elevated BROADWAY-EAST NEW YORK" complex, we see a train of "C" units in the company of a new "BINGHAM" Mack down below.

Unique buses indeed (MACK C-50-DT's) #'s 5200-5599 served to replace nearly a dozen B&QT streetcar lines.

These MACKS featured such innovations as florescent lighting, sliding side (and rear) windows, and "S"-type seating.

They were also very unique as they had been designed to be converted into makeshift ambulances in case of an atomic attack (recall, this was the Cold War era)

Interestingly, twenty of these new buses (#'s5200-5219), wearing "Bee-Oh-Tee" colors, never saw service in New York.

They were, instead, sent directly to Miami, where a serious fire there destroyed a number of their buses.

The MACKS operated in BoT colors, and were eventually purchased outright, never returning to "Noo Yawk".......

Refresh my memory, but didn't I see a few Bingham Macks in service on some of the then-'Bee O'Tee's' Manhattan routes?

No...I guess you were NOT dreaming, after all! Wink

Recall, too, that it would not be until 1956, when the "Tee-Yay" ordered MACKS (C-49's, 6000-series); in fact, these were the last MACKS purchased for "Noo Yawk".....

Regarding the "BINGHAM" Macks......

According to Greller's "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT SYSTEM BUSES AND TROLLEY COACHES", at least SOME of the these buses were later retrofitted with new seating, replacing the original "S"-type seating.

In later years, the (1956) C-49 MACKS had their original seating replaced with fiberglass; interestingly, green seating was used for the Brooklyn buses, while those buses running on Staten Island received pink seats........

In this early-1950's scene at the "Willy B" terminal, we have an 8000-series Peter Witt front and center, with a "Bingham" MACK lurking in the background...... Wink

These photos were taken a few decades apart, and make for interesting contrasts throughout the years (PCC, Old Look, Fishbowl) at the same location in Brooklyn..........

......the three photos I posted links to in the previous post are most interesting for several reasons.

We not only get to see the transition from streetcar to diesel bus, but also, not only the styles of vehicles used over the decades, but also, a glimpse back as to what films were popular at that time, a time when grand and opulent "movie houses" were so very commonplace, in so many neighborhoods.

Countless historical transit photos also provide so many interesting, fascinating views of what daily life once was like, along the streetcar, elevated, subway lines, and bus routes, so many decades ago, fond memories for many of us older fellows, as well as the younger guys too young to be able to share our wonderful memories, regarding the transit vehicles that were once as common as cracks in the sidewalk......
