I've learned (from others here) that the lot where the RED & TAN buses are parked is now built over.
Likewise long gone are the Fishbowls and Buffalos......

......I am curious to the bus storage yards adjacent to the PABT; I have not been anywhere near the PABT (nor have I been in New York) since I retired in 2004.
Are these yards (or lots) today all used by NJT, or, does LAKELAND and DE CAMP also use these areas?
I do know that the lot in back of the church (where the RED & TAN buses used to park) has been since built over.
Appreciate any info.....

.......you just NEVER know just who you will "meet" at the "Port-of-Authority"......
I was just reading this morning on how Disney was seeking the perfect "voice" for "Sebastian", the reggae-singing Jamaican crab from "The Little Mermaid", then soon to begin production (late 1980's)
The Disney "scouts" scoured the LA area, to no avail.
The search ended, of all places, at the PABT, where they happened across actor Samuel E. Wright; Mr. Wright went along with the audition in a "what the heck" type of manner, and his performance literally blew the Disney guys away......SMALL wonder!
I can just imagine "Sebastian" doing the station stop announcements on the 14th St. line ("L").......

Late 1980's......
I recall vividly that this was when NJT was fast replacing Fishbowls with new MCI's, METRO B's, and VOLVO artics.
I also remember the NJDOT "Dangerfields" lasting well into the 1990's, on some lines, however.
Yes, an era was indeed ending.....

I haven’t been back to The Port since I retired from there in Nov 2017, so I am curious if in the aftermath of the pandemic, with vastly cut back ridership and schedules with so many now working from home, if there is still the need to rebuild, or replace it with an expanded facility? |

I have been thinking likewise as of late.
With so many working at home since the pandemic (and many opting to continue to work from home, instead of commuting into their offices) I, too, was debating the need for an expanded (or totally new) PABT*.
IMHO, if the present terminal (and bus operations) are "streamlined" (i.e. modified) to be "in sync" with today's changing travel patterns, I, personally think that the present terminal can function quite efficiently, if the situation is addressed in a competent manner.
*(The last time I was in the terminal was in 2003, the day I retired, boarding a #159R VOLVO artic for home)

......given the ever-uncertain labor market, and turbulent economy, one can only wonder if the present PABT, one day, will be downsized?
No one, of course, can say for certain; all we can do is to study today's facts and trends, and speculate from there.
Who can say if NJT (and other carriers) will eventually begin cutting back services, as more and more former commuters opt to work at home?
Personally, I see a lot of restructuring in present-day NJT bus schedules in the not-too-distant future, as well as those of private carriers.
Time will tell, as it always does.....

When the new "Port-of-Authority" opened in late 1950, what routes (EIGHTH AVENUE COACH?) were then running on 8th Avenue?
And today?

Only one in 1950 . . . Rt. #10 - Eighth Avenue-Central Park West. This was one year before it and Madison Avenue Coach were all folded up into New York City Omnibus (of which both were "subsidiaries") and rolling stock on all buses within the three entities all showed 'NEW YORK CITY OMNIBUS CORPORATION' on the sides. Today, you have M20, M34A SBS, and (starting on 41st Street) M104.
Also, until 1954, Eighth Avenue was crosstown. It became one-way northbound thereafter through Columbus Circle. |

Broadway from Columbus Circle to Times Square, then Seventh Avenue / Varick Street the rest of the way. (This led to the demise of the 8 - Seventh Avenue line and its effective merger with 10; NYCO had originally planned to shift 8's northbound route to Eighth, terminating at 59th Street, but was told to ixnay it by then-Traffic Commissioner T.T. Wiley.) |
