In 1969, the "VICTORIA" tube opened, the first automated Underground line in London.

Here we see a stylishly-attired Queen Elizabeth riding aboard the ceremonial first train; the term "Driving Car" here refers to a car furnished with a motorman's (driver's) cab.......

Back in 1977, "DINKY TOYS" offered this special-livery "ATLANTEAN" double-decker, for the Queen's Silver Jubilee (I have several in my collection today).......

Historical note:

In 1953, the year of Queen Elizabeth's Coronation, the last London trams had been gone since the previous year.

However, LT was still operating an extensive trolleybus network (the final "Silent Giants" made their last runs in 1962)

Though most of LT's double-decker fleet were made up of the new "RT"-types, a number of the older "ST"/"STL" were still in service, as well as some of the wartime "Utility" buses.

Older single-deck buses, such as the "Q" and "T"-types were themselves being replaced with new "RF's"........

When Elizabeth became Queen in 1953, the "RT" was the newest double-decker in the LT fleet; they first entered service in 1939, but, it was not until after the War that these now-iconic buses began to appear on London's streets in great numbers.

Rugged, stalwart, and handsome, the very last "RT"-types were not retired until 1979, 40 years after the type was first introduced.

Thankfully, many of these historic and iconic buses are still with us today in 2022......
