if suffolk transit's 1987 Gillig Phantom's were numbered in the 8700's.
then what year were the buses that were numbered in the 900's?, because i always thought they were the '87 Gillig Phantom's. |

Knowing absolutely nothing about Suffolk Transit inparticular, I can tell you that it is possible that the Gillig Phantoms that you speak of with differing fleet numnber groupings may all have been 87's but arrived at different times during the same year.
Many operators will number each order of buses they receive (even in the same year) differently not only for record keeping purposes but for recognition by mechanics because subsequent orders may have changes in specification.
Of course, the within is only supposition and one of any number of scenarios.

My memory at this point isn't to great, but I think Mr. Linsky may be right that they were part of two different purchases.
Another thought is that some of them may have been 40 footers, like on the S-1 (Halesite to Amityville) and the 35 footers was on less traveled routes, hence the disparity on numbeing.
All subsequent purchases have had the two digit year as the first two numbers until the 2005 purchase. Then the system was tweaked to number the vehicles 50xx |

The 900s are '91s. Don't know why they were numbered differently. |

i think i know y the 900's aren't numbered with '91.
maybe the ones that were numbered in the 900's came before the whole order of '91s or the wanted to contiue with the three digit numbers for buses but then changed their minds half way though the order.
i thought the 900's were either 91's or 90's |

The Suffolk Transit roster is a mess. Remember Suffolk Transit is contracted to be run by private operators.
There were two groups of 35 foot Gilligs bought in 1986 and 1987. The 1987's were apparently three ad-ons to the 1986 order. They were numbered 701 to 760 (several numbers were skipped). The buses that went to Suffolk Bus were later renumbered with an "8" (eg: 720 became 8720). Several 700's were transfered to Suffolk Bus and received four digit numbers. The remainder that stayed with the other private operators kept the three digit numbers until they were scrapped.
In 1991 Suffolk Transit received 16 35 foot and 8 40 foot Gilligs. They were numbered 900 to 941 (again with skips). Suffolk Bus renumbered their buses from 900-908 to 9100-9108 (900/9100 was a 40 footer).
Not asked, but Suffolk Bus also renumbered a number of their older Gilligs and Chances into four digit numbers.

i know this is old but i just remembered something.
suffolk bus corp is owned or is part of Suffolk Transportation Service, Inc.
their school buses (Suffolk transportation) are numbered with three digits. (I Know This For A Facts Cuz I Rode On Them When I Was In Middle School) and their school buses are numbered with the same three digits that suffolk transit used to number the transit buses. so prob so they wouldn't get confused suffolk bus added an extra digit to their transit buses |
