I just chatted with a neighbor whose Dad was a gateman on Lexington Avenue.

Joe:

Recall, the old gate cars required one gateman between each set of cars; perhaps, in the photo you mentioned, extra manpower was required for a particular run (sadly, we'll never know)

The very last gatemen worked the convertible cars on the Myrtle Avenue El in 1958; these men were, indeed, symbols of another age and time.

Recall, the number of gatemen began to fall off drastically on the INTERBOROUGH's Manhattan El lines, as more and more gate cars were converted into MUDC units.

Too, when the gate cars were still running on the Dyre Avenue line, you had a two-man crew (motorman, and a combined conductor/gateman); the trains were only two cars in length.

After the change booth closed on that line after only one shift, the conductor/gateman also had to collect fare with a Johnson fare box.

When the steel "Hi-V" cars replaced the old gate cars about 1954/1955, a gateman, of course, was no longer needed........

Here's a proud veteran gateman working one of the last convertible El cars on the Myrtle Avenue line, in 1958......

Note these photos of the one-car (gate car) shuttle used during the off-peak hours on the 5th Avenue El; during off-hours, the change booths at the stations were closed, and the conductor/gateman collected fares on board (as was also done on the Dyre Avenue line).......

Here's another old photo of a single (gate) car train on the long-defunct 5th Avenue El......

Back in 1940, we see a single-car 5th Avenue El train riding high above an SBK steeplecab-hauled freight......indeed, this photo is a glimpse into a truly vanished world......

Here's a truly nostalgic photo of a crowded BMT gate train on an obviously warm day, circa-1940.

Looks like the folks are really enjoying their open-platform ride! Wink

(My mother well remembered such scenes!)

Here's another one-car train on the 5th Avenue El, taken in 1939.

The gateman/conductor is clearly in view, and, if you look closely, you'll spot the fare box used to collect fares when the change booth were closed.

Also, note the semaphore signals on the el, the interlocking tower, and overhead trolley wires for the B&QT streetcars......

In this 1942 scene, we see a Fulton line train of BMT convertible El cars crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, attempting to "catch up" to the PCC on its right.

In 1944, the El trains would stop crossing the Bridge, and the streetcars shifted over to the former El tracks, to make room for an additional traffic lane.

The streetcars themselves would make their last runs across the span in 1950.......

Hard to believe that scene was in 1958...it could just as easily been half a century earlier. While those cars were obviously around in my youth (I reached 11 in 1958), I can't remember them. Not sure if they ran on the Broadway/Brooklyn (J Line) back then which was my 'home' line for my early years, until the West End line became my 'home' line. I vividly remember the heavy Standards, the Triplexes, and the 'new' R-16's. Also recall the 'Q' Cars, when they closed out service on the Myrtle Avenue Local...

traildriver:

You are welcome! Wink

In the 1920's and early 30's, Mom and her family often rode a BMT El train out of Park Row, headed for Coney Island; Mom remembered even climbing into an open window as soon as an incoming train discharged its mob of passengers, in order to save seats for the family! Shocked

She remembers both Park Row and Stillwell Avenue being chaotic, crowded, and VERY exiting; she also remembers trains being backed up heading into Stillwell, and being excited by the salt air, wafting through the cars (she also well remember the convertible cars!)

The "El" lines were very often seen in movies and cartoons, back in the 30's and 40's (Max Fleischer cartoons had quite a few El "spot", back in the day, also, the IRT (not surprising, as the cartoons were made in "Noo Yawk"!) Very Happy

Hard to believe it is now almost 80 years since the last El trains rumbled across the mighty Brooklyn Bridge.....

The marker's look like there is an electric line into them, but the lantern the trainman is holding looks like it's a kerosene lamp...incredible if that lasted into the 1950's.... Surprised

traildriver:

I once saw, many years back, a color photo showing one of the last convertible gate cars on the Myrtle Avenue line, taken in 1958; down at street level, a new tailfinned auto was parked.....WHAT a contrast between the shiny new sedan and the ancient El car! Shocked

As a kid, I remember Mom and I riding Standards and Triplexes out of Times Square; the Standards always reminded me of the Staten Island ME-1's a bit (recall, the BMT's 4th Avenue line WAS to hook up to the SIRT, via a new set of tubes, under the Narrows, back in the 1920's.....imagine a one-seat ride from Tottenville to Chambers Street!)

Ahh, the memories....and what could have been...... Rolling Eyes

traildriver:

Hard to believe those ancient El cars lasted well into the Sputnik-era 1950's!

The few remaining BMT gatemen were indeed the very last of their breed; those that worked the old INTERBOROUGH gate cars on the Dyre Avenue shuttle lost their posts in the mid-50's, or thereabouts, when the old gate cars were replaced with surplus "Hi-V" IRT subway cars.....
