These two timeless 1960's-era photos show PCC's at Penn Station; the wall of the old car repair shop is clearly visible in these photos (this shop area no longer exists)

The repair shop was built prior to the arrival of the second-hand PCC's, when access to the ROSEVILLE car house was cut off; the area utilized space once used by the subway-surface cars, prior to 1952.......

Deck roof car #3212 (built by PS in 1913) was forty years old when this picture was snapped at the still-abuilding Franklin Avenue loop terminal, in late 1953.

Note that the platform canopy has yet to be constructed......

ASV #9228, signed for the "#9 NEWARK AVENUE" line, is seen laying over before its next run; this photo looks like it was snapped at the GREENVILLE carhouse/garage.

In the left background, note the car body of a retired PSNJ 4500-series trailer car, being used as a waiting shelter; before the NJT Metros came on the scene in the 1980's, ex-PSNJ/TNJ Fishbowls were used on this line.....

ASV #9112, wearing (for a brief time) the new postwar PSNJ gray scheme.

Subway-surface streetcars were also running at this (Newark) location when this photo was snapped; note, also, the classic PSNJ "BUS or CAR STATION" sign on the pole at left........

This circa-1946 scene depicts an off-street terminal, which appears to be in the general Newark area.

Note the two "modern" ASV's sporting the new postwar PSNJ gray (why PS repainted the newer-model ASV's, I have no idea, as all were retired in 1948, when ASV operation ended.

Interesting, too, is the contrast between the newer coaches, and the older front-engined YELLOW, which dated to the late 1920's, and was converted into an ASV in the later 1930's.

Streetcars also served this terminal......

Historical notes.......

The last streetcars purchased by PS were the 4500-series cars; these were purchased from OSGOOD-BRADLEY in 1920.

These Compromise roof-cars were the last new streetcars that PS would ever purchase.

By the mid-1920's, as PS was converting most of its fleet to one-man operation, the handwriting was indeed on the wall, spelling the eventual doom of the vast PS street railway network.

In 1925, PSNJ placed an order for 333 gas-electric buses from YELLOW; at that time, this was the largest order for buses by any American transit company.

Prior to the delivery of the new buses, a new garage was built on Lake St. in Newark.

Later in 1926, another large bus order went to YELLOW; this time, 395 gas-electric buses were ordered.

Given that PS was already looking to eventually operate only rubber-tired vehicles, it was somewhat of a quirk that they developed and introduced the dual-powered ASV concept.

Though the first large-scale conversion to ASV was in 1935 (the streetcar line that was converted was the #49 UNION" line, out of Newark); it was not until the years 1937-1938 that a widespread conversion to ASV's (and buses) replaced almost all of the remaining streetcar lines.

The BERGEN Division became an all-bus property by August, 1938; the only car lines in Newark to survive were those surface lines that connected to the City Subway.

Only four HUDSON Division car lines remained after 1938, and, they too would be converted to buses by August, 1949......

Further.......

PS's ASV operations only lasted 13 years (1935-1948); most of the lines, however, we only in use for a decade or less.

Oddly enough, PS again dabbled with the ASV concept, only two years after the last coaches were sold for scrap, and the last of the overhead taken down.

PS planned to pave over the City Subway, and operated new GM vehicles on both the "#7" line and the remaining connecting routes.

One demonstrator, #D-900 was tested under specially-erected overhead at the Bell St. yard in Montclair; though the tests were successful, the coach never ran under wire in revenue service.

When the City of Newark informed PS that it would have to foot the bill for the paving over the the Subway ROW, PS scrapped the "new generation" ASV plan, and began ordering new diesel coaches.

To re-equip the City Subway, PS purchased 30 ex-TCRT PCC's, to replace the old streetcars that were still providing all service on the #7, the sole remaining PS car line.

The unique D-900 went to the Plank Road shops and had its electrical gear removed; for some years, it operated on the "#29" line as a diesel, between Newark and Caldwell.

In 1960, it was transferred to the HUDSON Division, and was assigned to the GREENVILLE garage in Jersey City.........

Here is a rare view (from 1950) showing the General Motors' D-900 experimental ASV at the Bell St. loop in Montclair......

Here's an interesting rear view of #D-900 at the same location (Bell St. yard); a veteran 2600-series Compromise-roof car of the "#29" subway-surface line is seen on the left.......

ASV #9314, now wearing the new PS postwar gray, is seen here on the "#5 KINNEY" line; note that the semaphore arm on the ASV has been removed.

In the left background, an elderly deck roof car on the "#23 CENTRAL" subway-surface line can be glimpsed; this would date this nostalgic photo to pre-December, 1947, when the "#23" cars were replaced by buses........

ASV's........

The majority of PS drivers who "manned the helm" on the ASV's very much liked them; most drivers found them to be quick accelerators, easy to handle, and smooth riding.

The one headache, it seemed, to many ASV drivers, was when they had to go through junctions/intersections where there were not only the wires of another ASV line intersecting, but also, streetcar wires.

In both Newark and Jersey City, there were many such junctions, which tested the driver's skill, especially if they got caught in an intersection between lights, before the poles reached an overhead switch at a junction point.

"The Arch" at Elizabeth (beneath the CRRNJ) was one such ASV junction point that often tested the mettle of the drivers running on the routes passing through this busy area........

Here is an excellent example at just how complex ASV overhead could be; the older ASV in this photo was running on the "#43", which operated between Jersey City and Newark's PS Terminal (lower level)

ASV's replaced streetcars on this line in 1938.......

Here's another of the older (converted) YELLOW ASV's on the "#43", just outside the portal of the Cedar St. Subway in Newark, just beginning its eastbound run to Jersey City.

As I had mentioned earlier here, this line was converted to ASV from streetcars in 1938; the "#43" was also the last streetcar line to use the lower level of the PS Terminal.

In another related topic here, awhile ago, we were discussing ASV operations in the general Journal Square area.

Oddly, though ASV's operated along Sip Avenue, they did not serve the adjacent PS terminal, which was served by streetcars and buses.

Old photos indicate that PS buses, ASV's, and streetcars also all operated along Bergen Avenue.......

As the "#29-BLOOMFIELD" subway-surface car line was converted to buses in March, 1952, this classic photo would date to 1951 (note the DE CAMP buses alongside Compromise roof car #2721)

Also, The presence of a brand-new GM suburban is a bit unusual here, as DE CAMP, as a general rule, used old equipment on the line that served the Caldwell loop (the now long-gone "#22" line, from Journal Square)

"MOUNTAIN COACHES" (Trackless Transit's "#144") also served this now-defunct terminal loop for many years.......
