A 21-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder in a 2005 shooting that left a bus driver mostly blind, police said Tuesday.

Malcolm Chalmers, of no fixed address, was appearing in court on an unrelated charge on Monday when he was arrested.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 11 on charges of attempted murder while using a firearm and use of a firearm to commit an indictable offence.

On Oct. 15, 2005, at around 11:30 at night, Jaime Pereira was shot in the face after two groups of men got in a fight and fired shots.

Police credited the hard work of detectives in making an arrest more than two years after the crime occurred, but of particular note, Chief Bill Blair said, was the gun used.

"One of the most extraordinary findings in this investigation is the role that one firearm played in a trail of destruction," Blair said.

"From the time it first came to the attention of the police, it has been revealed to have been involved in a number of crimes."

The gun used to shoot and blind Pereira has also been linked to the murder of popular community leader Kempton Howard in 2003, as well as three other attempted murders in Toronto and Durham Region, Blair said.

"I think it is evidence of the destructive power [of] even a single firearm in the hands of criminals," Blair said.

Pereira sent a statement to police, thanking them for continuing to work on the case though so much time had passed.

"Although I will physically and emotionally never be the same, I am determined to continue a positive outlook and put this terrible incident in my past," Pereira wrote.
