The 86th Street Crosstown bus (Route 18 ), when inaugurated on June 8, 1936, actually replaced two lines: the NYRys streetcar route along the street, and Green Bus Lines' M-5 bus route which would be taken over by NYCO as part of the deal. (After finishing those bustitutions, NYCO acquired the Spring-Delancey, 79th Street and 96th Street franchises from GBL, numbering them 12, 17 and 19, respectively, with their operation of these routes commencing June 22; Spring-Delancey was especially ironic since that bus route was one of the first created under the aegis of NYC's Department of Plant and Structures to replace a streetcar line run by NYRys that was eliminated when that company reached bankruptcy in 1919.)
