I guess it IS true after all.......truth IS indeed STRANGER than fiction!Shocked

Talk about a COMEDOWN!!!!! Sad

Operating an MC-6 on a local route, such as you described, made about as much sense as using a standard rear-door transit coach on a run between New York and Chicago! Shocked

When NJT began taking delivery of new MC coaches in the 80's, I had thought them far too big to be used as commuter coaches; in those pre-Internet days, I did not know that GM was no longer building suburban models (even the GM-built RTS was of a transit-design, only)

NJT had 700 MC-9's ("Jersey Cruisers") built at Pembina, all seating 49; no lavatories were included.

In 1987, NJT took delivery of 415 more, also from Pembina; at this late date, the once-large fleets of suburban "heritage" Fishbowls began to vanish rapidly.

A new era in suburban commuter buses had arrived......

There was this model, produced from 1982 up until 1997, that extended the lifespan of the 'New Look' body..

traildriver:

I have noticed that, for whatever reason, whenever a "wiki" link has a " (.....) " , the link will not work when you click on it; trust me, I know this from experience...... Rolling Eyes

The following is from "THE BUS WORLD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BUSES", 1988, (Ed Stauss)

".......Canadian operators did not want the RTS which was being produced in the United States, so, in 1981, GM of Canada produced a prototype of an updated New Look with a flatter front end and a new window configuration......"

".......engineering changes were evolutionary instead of revolutionary, to retain the advantage of the mature New Look design, thus the buses were advertised as 'Classics'......."

"........production of the original New Look design continued simultaneously with the CLASSIC between 1983 and 1986. ......"

".........In August, 1987, the St. Eustache plant was sold to Greyhound Canada, Inc. of Calgary, Alberta, a subsidiary of Greyhound Corporation. Diesel Division had produced 1,121 'Classic' buses by July 1987, when production responsibility was assumed by Greyhound's Motor Coach Industries, based in Winnipeg....."

"....the last GM-built 'Classic was delivered to Toronto Transit Commission in July, 1987......"

(the following comment was current when the "BUS WORLD ENCYCLOPEDIA" was first published in 1988:

"....the bus continues to be produced unchanged by MCI........"

Here's a few NJT photos from 2010, depicting handsome MCI's.

My personal moniker for commuter MCI coaches, has, for many a year now, been "Suburban Hounds"....... Wink

Here's two photos of SamTrans Fishbowls; SamTrans, in later years, as you already know, ran the commuter routes formerly operated by GREYHOUND, and also inherited its suburban fleet.......

Also of interest:

"......in 1967, GREYHOUND announced the 'road testing of the first dramatically new bus since the mid-1950's'; this experimental model, the MC-6X, was tested on express runs between Chicago and New York City......"

".......this new bus was feet longer, and more than a foot higher and six-inches wider than a then-current single-level bus......"

"......the experimental coach also featured a cargo capacity twice the size of existing single-level buses, a benefit for growth in GREYHOUND's 'Package Delivery Service'......."

"......GREYHOUND also road-tested the MC-6X in California, Arizona, and Nevada......."

"......a second prototype, sent to Europe in 1968, for the installation of a new diesel engine developed by Mercedes-Benz, was later sent back to the States for further road testing......"
