Official MTA Press Release NYCT16
IMMEDIATE#16
New Expanded Service on MTA NYC Transit S89 Limited-Stop Route
Responding to the increasing popularity of the new S89 limited-stop bus service, three daily trips will be added beginning Monday, April 7th. The route, MTA New York City Transit's first interstate bus service, links Eltingville, Staten Island and Bayonne, New Jersey. It has seen steady ridership growth since its introduction, particularly during the busiest a.m. and p.m. peak hours.
The S89 currently operates from 5:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. Bus service is coordinated with NJ Transit's Hudson Bergen Light Rail service (HBLR) at the 34th Street station. Customers have responded enthusiastically to the new service, which now carries 800 to 900 customers per day, nearly double the number served when the S89 service began last September.
The S89 operates via Richmond Avenue and Marsh Avenue, serving major bus stops and transfer points including the Eltingville SIR Station and the Eltingville Transit Center. The expanded service includes: a new first northbound a.m. peak trip leaving Hylan Boulevard and Richmond Avenue at 5:25 a.m., increasing the span of service; an additional northbound AM peak trip leaving Hylan Boulevard and Richmond Avenue at 7:03 a.m.; and an additional Staten Island-bound PM peak trip leaving the HBLR 34th Street Station at 5:02 p.m.
The addition of these trips will provide Staten Island customers with improved access to expanding job markets in Bayonne, Jersey City and Hoboken and will promote continued ridership growth.
