While on the subject of the SST, SINGAPORE AIRLINES was the only carrier other than AIR FRANCE and BRITISH AIWAYS to have their paint scheme and titles actually appear on a Concord (QUITE stylish, looking!) Wink

On another interesting note, BRANIFF operated an interchange from Washington Dulles (IAD) to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW)

Oddly enough, even though a then-current AIRFIX plastic model kit shows full BRANIFF livery on its left side, no Concorde was ever painted in BRANIFF colors.......

"Deja Vu" for sure, here....... Shocked

Odd that I received this delivery from an eBay dealer today, when we are currently discussing the Concorde/SST....... Shocked

Last Friday, I found a really sharp (nice sized!) mint-in-the-box BRITISH AIRWAYS Concorde vintage friction toy, STILL in its original box, going for only $25.00!! (dealer said that this was an estate find)

Today, I was QUITE surprised, to say the least, to find this package on my doorstep, just a couple of days after ordering! (well, after all, it IS a CONCORDE......and SPEED what it's all about!) Wink

Original price is still on the box ($4.95!)

The box also says that the plane has a "REALISTIC DROOPING NOSE" and "STEERABLE FRONT WHEELS"........for $25.00, this is a really COOL addition to my aviation collection, not to mention recalling another, historic time in commercial aviation.......

Tupolev Tu-144 trivia........

It has been said that that the Tu-144 had no "artificial" feel (Mach) which most American, British, and French craft had. These systems made the controls stiffer as speed increased.

In a similar fashion, some automobiles had power steering that decreases its force as as speed increases........

The Singapore Airways Concorde, was painted only on one side Singapore...the other side remained British Airways.
And even though there were renderings of Braniff liveried Concorde's, none were ever painted that way.

Regarding the "Interchange" operation between Braniff and both BA and Air France, on the alternating Dallas-Washington-London or Paris flights...
Both the pilots and flight attendants changed at Washington. The Braniff pilots actually flew the Concordes, and even though only at subsonic speeds due to FAA regulation's, they were in fact trained and certified at supersonic speeds.

On the other hand, only the flight attendants changed on the flights to Singapore at Bahrain. Singaport pilots never were trained on the Concorde, so BA pilots (and engineers) went all the way to Singapore.

BTW, the Speedbird used on that route is G-BOAD...the very one now at the Intrepid Air Sea and Space Museum in New York. That aircraft is the highest time total hour Concorde, and it also happens to hold the commercial flight speed record across the Atlantic, in just 2 hours, 52 minutes, and 59 seconds, done eastbound in 1996.

I had the good fortune to fly on that very bird westbound in 1998. I did it on a reduced 'employee rate' ticket, thanks to my working for AA part time back then...we happened to have the record holding Captain...

Cool

I'll say it again....YOU, my friend, have DONE it ALL, and SEEN it all......LUCKY man, for sure!!!! Very Happy Very Happy

Regarding BRANIFF colors on a CONCORDE; this makes me think of the artist's renditions I've seen over the years, depicting Concordes in TWA colors (this was in the "Double Globe" era); in fact, toys were then available of TWA Concordes* (getting one of these rare birds for my collection is a MAJOR goal for Your's Truly, one of these days!) Wink

Thanks, also, for providing so much historical information on the "interchange"; I found this QUITE interesting, to say the least...... Very Happy

(In the original "AIRPORT", a large scale model of a TWA Concorde is seen several times in Mel Bakersfeld's office....a NICE "job perk", for sure!) Wink

Was doing some more research, and was fortunate enough to come across this OUTSTANDING page (link below); here, we not only get a lot of interesting reading, but also, we get to see drawings of how the Concorde would have looked like wearing the liveries of the airlines that had intended to order them, but never did.

Among the domestic carriers:

TWA

EASTERN

AMERICAN

CONTINENTAL

UNITED

Just imagine what we could have seen at the airports, back in the day, had these airlines (and others) actually flew the Concorde......WOW!!!!!! Shocked Shocked

https://www.heritageconcorde.com/concorde-orders-and-options *

"NYO"

*It was quite interesting to learn here that IRAN AIR had originally planned to buy two of the craft, with one option.

Though the orders were cancelled in 1980, IRAN AIR, in fact, DID operate a Concorde for a short time, for occasional charter flights between Paris and Tehran and Paris and Kish Island.

This lone Concorde was never painted into the IRAN AIR livery.......

"THE CONCORDE FLEET-BREAKDOWN OF EACH AIRFRAME BUILT"

("When you take off from New York in the dark, and see the sun rise in the West, you know you are doing something slightly different.")

Here's another EXCELLENT Concorde page with a number of great photos/drawings, as well as a lot of interesting historical facts.*

"THE PLANE THAT NEVER WAS" (the TWA Concorde*)

The huge 7' model scene here MIGHT have been the one (or, at least, one like it) seen in Mel's office in "AIRPORT" (1970); this model is BEYOND impressive.

Ahhh, what might have been........

www.twamuseumguides.blogspot.com/2016/07/twas-concorde-sst-plane-that-never-was.html

(courtesy: TWA MUSEUM BLOG)

*Both TWA and PAN AM cancelled their orders in 1973; the last CONCORDE flew in 2003, 17 years ago.....pardon the pun, but time indeed FLIES.

Out of the 20 built, only 14 ever saw regular passenger service.

Imagine going out to the "new" Newark Airport, back in the 70's, and seeing a TWA Concorde on the tarmac.....(!!) Shocked

I'm afraid that "imagine" would be the only way to see that sight...even if TWA did operated Concorde's, you can be assured they would only see their JFK Flight Center, for their New York stop.... Wink

traildriver:

That is true......but, as it costs nothing to dream, you might as well go FIRST CLASS! Wink

Still, it would have been something, to see the least, to see what civil aviation today might be like, had the SST-concept truly "took root".

IMHO, it was the "jumbo" concept", beginning with the 747, that truly changed the face of air travel.

I also think that one of the reasons that the 747 (and following "jumbos"/"wide bodies") became as popular as they were, was due to the fact that the airlines saw that jumbo SUB-SONIC airliners would, indeed, be the less expensive (as well as the more "traditional" way to fly the traveling public from "A" to "B".

Too, think of how the "NIMBY" camp has grown both in size and power since the the days when a number of airlines thought that the Concorde was, indeed, the "way of the future"; recall, also, in "AIRPORT (both the novel and the film) the protest groups picketing the airport, over the noise of the big jets flying over residential areas.

I would imagine that these protests would be even louder and more vocal today; but, then, again, complaints over noise from aircraft (private and commercial) taking off and landing at any of a number of airports across the land, have already been with us for many a decade.

Teterboro has faced such complaints for eons, beginning in the 1930's, even though it has mostly served private aircraft.......
