"It's such a comfort to take the bus.....and leave the driving to us."

Us older fellows (Your's Truly included) can clearly recall those long-gone halcyon days when GREYHOUND was still indeed "America's Bus Line".

Greyhound, once upon a time, was such a far-flung operation, that their sleek buses could take one to places that even the train could not.

By traveling to virtually every corner of the country, the nation was indeed yours for the taking, from the windows of a SCENICRUSER, 4104, or SILVERSIDES.

GREYHOUND, indeed, captured the hearts and imaginations of virtually all Americans, back in the day.

No other bus company, not even TRAILWAYS, was replicated so extensively in toy form than GREYHOUND, back in the 1950's and 1960's.

Sadly, the days of drivers in military-inspired uniforms, stylish, well-dressed passengers, and safe, clean, streamlined Moderne terminals have long since vanished down the echoing, dimly-lit corridors of time.

Remember the many commercials GREYHOUND had on television (the last I can remember featured the late, great Pearl Bailey), long ago.

Recall the handsome "Lady Greyhound" (aka "Steverino") on the Steve Allen Show?

Remember how many movies of years back featured GREYHOUND (1934's "IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT", was the first of many Hollywood flicks to feature "The Hound")

Sadly, there is not much left of the once-great GREYHOUND network today, and, what is left has indeed fallen upon hard times.

Remember when "The Hound" still called at Journal Square, in Jersey City?

Recall the Art-Deco GREYHOUND terminal across from the old Penn Station in Manhattan?

Us older guys are indeed fortunate that, even if we were only kids at the time, we can still recall when "The Hound" was still "howling" throughout our great land, opening up new worlds of adventure to all..........Wink

Even on the 'net, there is much less "Hound" presence (exluding Facebook groups)

Remember the awe-inspiring "STRAYHOUND" site?

Here, indeed, was an AWESOME site that encompassed ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that had to to with GREYHOUND, its history, its employees, and its buses.

Today, "STRAYHOUND"* has vanished from the 'net, like a fleeting mist at dawn.

Then, there was "SCENICRUISER.com"; here, without a doubt, was THE definitive site for the legions of SCENICRUIER fanatics (Your's Truly included!).......this was another intricate and most-informative site that, like "STRAYHOUND", is no more.

Today, I must have at least 100 vintage toy GREYHOUND buses in my collection, as well as other "Hound" memorabilia.

For me, at least, the memory of those proud buses......as well as the proud men who sat behind the wheels like "The Gods Of The Highways".....will never fade from sight......or memory.......... Wink

"NYO"

*"Bluehounds and Redhounds", another excellent site, has also disappeared...... Sad

The following is from a circa-1960 GREYHOUND-issued motorist's safety comic book, "DRIVING LIKE A PRO"........

GREYHOUND driver (when asked if Greyhound drivers had to go a a training school):

"They sure do! It costs Greyhound $1500 a student to make us the most thoroughly trained, most-in-demand drivers in public transportation.......they give us an intensive training course for six long weeks in all the details of driving and safety from 'stop' to 'go'....."

".......when you're in a GREYHOUND bus, you're safer than in your own car....you're riding with a PRO......"

(the bus featured in this nostalgic comic is a 4104; the driver resembles a high-ranking Air Force official.......ahhh, the glories of what was.....)

The first two have incorrect caption's,,,.those Silversides are not 4101's, maybe 4151's...
That unknown location in the third photo may be Newburgh, NY...GL did stop there on New York-Albany local's via US 9W...way back when.
