Scroll down to: "VARIANTS BASED ON THE NEW LOOK", for information on the Canadian articulated units
(also, note the sad ending of the Edmonton New look trolley buses that were sent to Bulgaria after trolley bus service ended; sadly, these unique vehicles were scrapped,. and never operated overseas)......

*Also, note the photo at the top of the page. showing the handsomely restored "NEW YORK BUS SERVICE" Fishbowl.......BEAUTIFUL! |

Long ago, I remember reading how there was a good chunk of the riding public that were not at all enthusiastic about articulated buses, because, given the higher capacity of these buses, that headways would be increased accordingly.
Though I certainly do not have any "concrete" proof to substantiate this viewpoint, I CAN honestly saw that NJT bus service in my area has declined steadily since the 1980's and into the 1990's.
Riding the buses around my area is no longer the convenient option it once was, years ago.
Some routes have been cut back, others eliminated; too, there is the dollar-van jitney issue that NJT does not seem to care about, even though I have seen many potential NJT customers boarding these rickety vans because NJT headways are too long (why these rattletrap vans are allowed to operate I have no idea, but, sadly, they are obviously here to stay, both here and in New York)
Getting back to the articulateds, do the MTA's artics have seating in the articulated "accordian" section, as is common practice on NJT?
While artics indeed are well-suited for heavy rush hour trips, it would seem (on a number of lines) that a non-artic would be better suited for off-hour runs.......

At present, I cannot watch vids, but I'm sure that others will appreciate the link you posted!
Hard to believe, now, that in many cities, artics have been commonplace for thirty years or more.
Artics have been in MTA service for nearly a quarter of a century, now (hard to believe!)
Time indeed flies.......

Sorry NYO. Search for Prevost H5-60 articulated. You should get some images from that search. Also I incorrectly typed in Provost instead of Prevost. DArn iPad. I guess I was thinking of Jon Provost who played Timmy in the Lassie TV series.
Thanks for all of your posts. I enjoy them. |

Thanks for the heads-up!
As I was also a die-hard "LASSIE" fan decades ago, I had the feeling you had "Provost" and "Prevost" confused.....no problem!
It's a shame that the experimental RTS articulated of a few decades ago never netted any production orders; man, could you imagine a fleet of those big bad boys operating on MTA routes?

The RTS artic I just mentioned was the "MEGA".
The lone demo was built in 1981, but GM determined that the market potential was inadequate, and and did not (as mentioned previously) did not sell any production models.
If only GM could have seen then just how much of a demand there was going to be for articulated buses, from the mid-80's and onwards.........

I work in White Plains, NY and the Westchester Bee Line System run artics. I see them every day in downtown White Plains. |

I had forgotten that BEE LINE operated articulateds as well; thanks for reminding me of this......

.....earlier, I heard a brief snippet on 1010 WINS that the MTA is testing an electric articulated bus on the 14th St. corridor; the brief blurb also mentioned about the MTA eventually aquiring 500 more, enough for each borough.
There was also mention on how long a bus could travel under a single charge.
This reminded me of an article (w/photos) I saw years ago online, about a bus (which looked like a typical trolley bus) that actually ran on battery power, and the poles were raised at "charging stations": along the route (this may have been in Germany, but am not sure)
It will be quite interesting, to say the least, how the MTA will operate and recharge these buses.....

*the aforementioned 1010 WINS report also mentioned the MTA eventually having a "zero emissions" fleet at some point in the future; heck, that's what streetcar companies once all operated, back in the day (BRT/BMT, TARS, PSNJ, PE, etc.)...... |

Recall, also, PSNJ's large fleet of ASV's (All-Service Vehicles) that PS developed in the 1930's and ran until 1948.
Both Boston (SILVER LINE) and Seattle operate dual-powered "trolley" buses; such vehicles are also to be found in Europe.
Today, only the most astute public transit historian would know that today's "dual-power"/"hybrid" buses are ancestors of the PSNJ All-Service Vehicle.......
