MaBSTOA 15:

If you ever (hopefully!) get that awesome-sounding VHS tape transferred to DVD, PLEASE send me a PM, and I will GLADLY pay for a copy! Very Happy

Man, I'd love to see my old four-wheeled friends again, as I remember them! Wink

BTW:

Back in the 60's, long before the Journal Square Transportation Center (UGH!!) ever opened, Journal Square was always a beehive of bus activity....several "indy" local companies.......and, of course, DE CAMP, INTER-CITY, GREYHOUND.........Old Looks, Whites, Macks, ACF-BRILLS, etc., etc......man, what a COLORFUL VARIETY of REAL buses once awaited the die-hard bus enthusiast! Very Happy

(no oversized milk cartons or giant insectoid mutants, then!)

As I was a little kid who LOVED buses, and living only 15 minutes north of "The Square" (via the good ol' NHBL #1!), Journal Square was as close to HEAVEN as you could get on this earth! (at least, to me!) Very Happy

Journal Square, 1964.

This timeless scene (impossible to duplicate today) is forever etched in my memory; this is where Mom and I would board the #1 (too many times to count over the years!) to head home to Union City (we used to watch the old H&M "Black" trains from the bridge, as well as PRR electrified freights!)

Note a classic representive of the diversity of the NHBL fleet in this photo; a WHITE, a MACK, and an Old Look!

The #5 would be heading to the PABT, while the #1 would be heading for Nungessers (North Bergen)

At the time of this photo, my family lived only 15 minutes north of here, just off Hudson (now Kennedy) Boulevard; these same buses would be passing by our old apartment house just minutes after this photo was taken!

According to Mom (may she rest), these were the SAME buses that got me hooked when I was only about 6 months old! Shocked

I'm not at all surprised........ Wink

Quick question.......

What ever happened to the #144? (AFAIK, this route is long defunct)

I knew this line very well between 1971 and 1975; the last time I rode the route was in 1979.

What was the disposition of the "MOUNTAIN COACHES" (TRACKLESS TRANSIT" fleet?

Appreciate any info......thanks in advance......

I think our late friend Mr. "L" mentioned this long ago in another thread.

I always found the idea of second-hand buses in my area very interesting; back in the early/mid-1990's, a good friend of mine drove an ex-Cleveland Fishbowl on the former NHBL #1 line, between Journal Square and Nungessers......that was a NICE bus to ride each afternoon for several years, as part of my commute! Very Happy

.............from 1971 to 1975, I was very familiar with the #144: I rode it often into Newark to railfan the City Subway (all PCC's back then!); a;so Mom and I used it for shopping, and my cousins and I would hop aboard for a quick trip to the local (West Orange) shopping center, to grab a bite at a great restaurant that used to be located there.

From September, 1974, until June of 1975, I rode the #144 each morning from Penn Station, Newark, to Pleasantdale (West Orange) to attend classes at Mountain High School (my senior year)

This was when the fleet serving the #144 were all Fishbowls; I remember the buses being green and white, and when repainted buses were getting "black" windows.

Before we moved back in from West Orange, I remember there being a strike in 1972, and then weekend service being cut back (Sunday service was later stopped altogether)

I last rode the #144 in 1979.....can't believe that's 40 years ago, already.......
