|
|
While in Midtown yesterday I spotted a Castleton-based MCI cruiser at E. 42 & Mad. Affixed to the rear bulkhead just below and in-board of the LH hi-mounted brake lamp was a square orange decal, about 8" x 8".
What does this signify? |

The orange sticker indicates it has permission to use the HOV lanes in the NJTP/Garden State Pkwy/Lincoln Tunnel. This is something you will see on all SI Division MCIs as well as MCIs formerly based out of SI such as bus 2828 out of Casey Stengel.
Edit One more remark. YOu will also see that red sticker affixed on the Back of the R/S exterior Mirror.
An example would be the URL listed below:

While we're on this subject, what does the red sticker underneath the bus number in this photo signify?

If the red stickers are reflective as they appear to be, they may only be for delineation which would probably be used in night time close in parking situations at depots.
Years back we had a row of marble sized glass reflectors encased in an oblong metal fixture that served pretty much the same purpose, and is illustrated below between the front door and headlight of Green Line # 824.
I'm sure I'll be corrected on this but it's as good of a guess as any!

Mr. RT
My pleasure, but these Macks were for the 39/40 World's Fair in Flushing.
It's really is a great picture - one of my best - I think.

I questioned this red sticker thing with someone from NYCT and was told "I think it has to do with making the bus stand out in an area that has service from different garages, so a dispatcher will know its his bus coming down in the group up the block. I'm calling B.S. on that, I don't think the guy really knew. |

I remember asking an operator from ENY and he tells me that this means the bus is safe to park out doors when its cold.
Buses without such stickers are not to be parked outside because they may encounter issues starting up the engine the next morning. |
