Carey Transportation operated this stunning Mercedes-Benz bus in New York City airport service in the early 1960s...

Anybody have a complete bus roster for Carey??

Carey was one of those operators that attracted the curiosity of enthusiasts...

It wasn't an intercity operator, it was not a transit company, and it wasn't a suburban service. It was an airport taxi service. I used their service a couple of times from JFK and they stopped at Jamaica Station for fare collection.

Their mix fleet was interesting to say the least...

They started with Flxible "Clippers" Then GM PD-4104 followed by PD-4106. Add a couple of GM TDH-4515 suburbans with full silversides! A couple of 35 foot New Looks and the Mercedes-Benz in the above picture.

They also operated the intra-airport service at JFK (way before the AirTrain) using three door Mercedes-Benz buses.

They also had at least one Van Hool minibus.

My favorite was their 42nd Street service between the East and West Side Air Line Terminals. For this service they used several ex-NOPSI GM TDH-5105 buses. They were the first wide body (102") king size (40 foot long) buses to operate in Manhattan until Avenue B and East Broadway operated some ex-Queens Transit and South Suburban Safeway TDH-5105, on lease, during 1975-1976.

I always enjoyed seeing Carey buses passing my JHS 218 along Main Street.
This was prior to the Van Wyck Expwy extension, taking them off that route.
The Flxible's, and GM 4104's.

And it was Carey that gave me first ever look at what turned out to be my all time favorite coach...the PD-4106.

I recall those ex New Orleans shuttles along 42nd street. They did not check tickets, and I would occasionally grab a 'free ride' from the West Side Airlines Terminal to the Airline Ticket Office at Grand Central Terminal....
They usually used the original sign roll fixed on "Airline", which was one of the NOPSI routes on the Airline Highway in La.

Carey operated "Airline Connection Service" at JFK using Mercedes-Benz buses.

LOVE those vintage Euro buses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

How appropriate that a VW Beetle is just above the MERCEDES bus in that photo!!!!! Very Happy Very Happy

That bus reminds me of those neat little HO scale European buses made by VIKING that Mom used to get for me at the old POLK's on 5th Avenue: "5 FLOORS OF HOBBIES!" Wink

GREAT PHOTO, as always....... Wink

PS:
