It's funny, but any time I've seen an old color photo of a SURFACE bus, I've long thought the same thing: the red/black designations always made think of the "reverse" of what FACCo. used on its signs.

And that may be the key as to why one picture from 1963 of a #4 bus to Penn Station had the route number on the right rather than left - from the point MaBSTOA took over the FACCo, NYCO and ST routes in '62 to late September '63 #4 was based out of a Surface depot (Kingsbridge), not to return to its old stomping grounds of 132nd until Sept. 29, 1963.

W.B.:

While on this subject, I wish the photo of one of SURFACE's last new buses, #3034 (TDH-5106) seen on page #50 of Guy E. Martin's "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT BUSES" was in color

Even in b/w, the "color reversal" used on the destination sign is clearly vivid.

How and why the red/black of FACCo's signs was reversed on SURFACE buses does make for some interesting "why and wherefors".........

Triboro Coach also had the route in red and final destination in black.

Unfortunately there is no textbook available on New York City bus destination signs.

However, there is an excellent series called “New York City Subway Roll Signs” so far they have two volumes out. It is written by Gregory Gil and Louis Guadagni.

You can also check their website at www.goodstuffnowllc.com

Thanks! Very Happy

Loving the old subway equipment as I do, I know I'll enjoy this! Wink

Those I have in my collection today are, not surprisingly, indeed greatly valued by Your's Truly, and bring back a lot of great memories of "riding the rails" 'neath the bustling streets of "Noo Yawk".......... Smile

Le'me guess . . . the batwing behind displaying the Gloria Vanderbilt ad was picked because of her recent death . . . ? Question

I had not paid the slightest attention to the ad itself (may Gloria RIP); what I DID notice about the batwing ad was that the ad also covered the former driver's side sign box.

I always regretted that the "center" side sign boxes fell out of favor; they always reminded me of the large center side signs once used on many center entrance streetcars.......

#8728 "on the job", 1982.

Note that the front roller curtain is not correctly set; also, note the blue sign over the rear doors*......

(*also note that the "7" is missing from the side number)

The current exhibit on the evolution of signs at the Transit Museum Annex at Grand Central Station had a "spliced" section of an old 'batwing' side sign I did not see in any pics - a dark blue covered M16 designation with 'Water-' on one line and 'side' on the line directly below, dating to about 1974. That and the M41 Culture Loop were the only 'new' portions of batwing-oriented signs I'd ever seen.

W.B.:

I sure wish, back in the day when such transit collectibles were still fairly reasonable in price, that I could have nabbed at least ONE rear door "batwing" roller sign w/box........oh, well, I can always dream....... Rolling Eyes
