.....it would appear that #8566 was not fully "dressed for business" in this 1983 photo........

It's pretty clear that in this 1973 photo (31st & 8th) SOMETHING interesting was going on.......

Harway & 25th Avenue, 1981.
...........perhaps the fellow on the corner, after upon looking over the "landscape" around him, is, just maybe, softly humming a certain old tune, "Don't Fence Me In"??
Note the MACK (is this today's Museum Bus?) and two Old Looks behind the fence; also, the elevated structure (a "Tee-Yay" employee tower of sorts?)
Also, note the old streetcar line poles, long disused by this date.......

Wasn't this close to the Knicks' and/or Rangers' opening season? I know the Knicks in those days were on fire due to their 1970 and '73 championships. Too bad from there on in it was downhill . . . (Jethro Tull had a gig at "the Garden"* on Aug. 28-29, but it wasn't until Sept. 11 that Elton John would perform there, among the entertainment offerings at "the Felt Forum." Led Zeppelin played there July 27-29, so it couldn't have been that.)
* A rather shame that 'MSG' is now used as shorthand for that venue - given the connotations to 'monosodium glutamate'.
#5513 was the third-last "non-batwing" Fishbowl in the 1964-65 order. |

W.B.:
You might be right; my best friend from work, Jim (RIP), was an AVID Knicks fan, and I remember him telling me how hot they were, back then (he was a BIG fan of Bill Bradley!)
He was also a big-time Rangers fan; for either a Knicks or Rangers game, he would take the LIRR in from Hicksville, where he was then living.
Whatever was going on in that photo I found, it sure seemed that the buses were busy.....

"What's up?" .........literally!
(Union Square E. & 16th St., 1978)
http://bus.nycsubway.org/perl/show?1248
I've always wondered at this "double-deck trial".........IMHO, I think that most folks, even then, knew that it would be highly impracticle (with the exception of tour/sightseeing buses) to attempt to bring them back to New York.
The New York of the FACCo's heyday had, even in 1978, long since vanished; the New York of the 70's.....and the New York of today.....are clearly not places for double-deckers to operate in revenue service.
The "cons" far outweigh the "pros", in this case.....

Guy E. Martin's otherwise great New York City Transit Buses 1945-1975 had quite a few errors, as you or someone else might have noted in other places. They claimed, in the Fifth Avenue Coach section, that the FACCo #1 is today's M1 when in fact it isn't (despite its southbound route path, from 135th to 8th Street, since 2010, mimicking that of FACCo #1), but rather the old NYCO Fourth and Madison Avenues line. (I say that because this Leyland DD was holding down the M1 route at the time this pic was taken.)
The FACCo section in Mr. Martin's book also had a pic, on the last page before going to NYCO, of FACCo #2394 on Rt. 3 at Washington Square. It had to have been taken in 1955, due to the following "small details":
- The bus sides, below the passenger windows, noted 'FIFTH AVENUE COACH LINES' (the first three words in the serif type FACCo used on their livery for so many years, 'LINES' in the same Copperplate Gothic font as on NYCO's fleets)
- And most important, near the bottom front left and bottom front right sides, in small type: 'NEW YORK CITY OMNIBUS CORP. OPERATOR'
(I don't know if this was on all FACCo buses, or just a few - but if you see it, you can't forget it; it certainly came before the whole schleboodle was rebranded as Fifth Avenue Coach Lines, Inc.)
This last detail in particular - especially given how NYCO had originally been founded as a FACCo subsidiary to administer bustituted New York Railways streetcar routes - reminded me of the title of a book, The Fish That Ate The Whale, about an entrepreneur of a small banana company who took over the powerful United Fruit Company. |

Just what were they thinking, back in '77??
There HAD to be a reason WHY double-deckers were phased out in New York in the first place (and we all know this story!)
That a double-decker trial took place over 20 years after the last double-deckers lumbered down Fifth Avenue, does make you pause and scratch your head for a minute or two.......

*Cannot help wondering what became of those roller curtains, when the trial was over.........

Ostensibly, from what I read, the reasons for these trials were the same as why FACCo retired their last double-deckers in 1953 - "economic reasons." |

W.B.:
Great input, as usual!
It never ceases to amaze me how, with an otherwise well-researched transit book, how there can be so many glaring (and subtle) errors; it's obvious that most such books are researched with a fine-tooth comb, and yet, errors can (and usually do) make an appearance, sometimes several times (or more) within the work.
IN light of the fact that the Ogden book on FACCo. virtually ignored the New Looks, a worthy work indeed would be a book entitled:
"THE NEW LOOK: FIFTH AVENUE COACH'S FORGOTTEN BUS".
A book such as this would fill a good-sized gap in many a bus enthusiast's library.....
"NYO"
*I shudder to think what the MTA's current issues with fare evasion would be like, if double-deckers ever came back......."MAN YOUR BATTLE STATIONS!!" |

"WHAT THE %^#@ IS UP, here??"
These photos date to 1955 (according to photo caption);these TWIN COACHES, only several years old, are here awaiting scrapping.
NO MARKET at all for these virtually new buses
Sad..................what a waste..........

"What's up??"...........
(Court & Sackett, 1972*)
Clearly, no one told a certain Ed Norton that he could have retired back in 1965........

I wonder if #4077 has a "No Passenger" sign because it's rear tire is off the ream?... Certainly looks like it
I loved those ConEd man-hole fences! |
