Just a personal note, here......

In the early and mid-1960's, Mom and I traveled into Manhattan too many times to count (shopping, sightseeing, pleasure, etc.)

Sometimes, we took a NHBL #5 (an Old Look, White, or Mack!) from our corner and into the "Port Of Authority"; other times, we took a NHBL #1 south on Hudson (now Kennedy) Boulevard to Journal Square, where we would then board one of the ancient H&M (PATH) "Black" trains for the quick (but ALWAYS interesting!) trip into Manhattan.

Back then, our neighborhood in Union City was all white; when we were in New York, the fact that I saw many black people never phased me in the least......one reason was that I was FAR more interested in the subways (and, of course, buses!) to pay too much attention to the people (I DO remember they were FAR better dressed than most folks are today, and common courtesy still very much around!)

When I saw subway motormen, conductors, and bus drivers during these frequent (and ALWAYS a lot of fun!) visits into the city, their color mattered nothing to me; that were worked on the SUBWAYS and BUSES was MORE than enough for Your's Truly!

They were GODS, as far as my young mind was concerned....I idolized them all.....whether they were black or white made no difference.

There were some times I can recall that one of these fellows would give me a quick wave and a smile; that one of the Gods even acknowledged me made a HUGE impression on my young psyche, believe me!

As I grew older and into manhood, this viewpoint of mine never changed; of course, the vintage subway cars and classic buses that were so much an important part of my growing-up years have long ago met the dreaded torch, and the vast majority of the proud men who worked these trains and buses have long since passed on to that big bus garage/subway yard in the sky......despite this, I'll never stop mourning the passing of that great and colorful era in transit that I was so fortunate to be a part of for so many years.

Virtually every aspect of the buses and subways is computerized and ultra high-tech these days.....I don't know, but to me, it just ain't the same.

But, at least I'll always have those great memories....... Wink

Back in "Noo Yawk", and waaay back in 1972, we are now at Hillside & Merrick.

The photo is a bit blurry, but, still, a timeless image of "the way it was", back in the day.

How much we all took for granted......

Flatbush Avenue, 1972.

That classic "NEIGHBORHOOD POLICE TEAM" squad car sure would make for a great exhibit at a classic car show, today! Very Happy

Needless to say, #8085, of course, is in a timeless class all its own......... Wink

For just a moment, let's pay a little visit to that colorful Mardi Gra Capital, "Nawlins" and watch these fellows pilot their classic green streetcars through the historic streets......

59th St. & 5th, 1987.

Here we see #5364 sporting the dreaded "WHITE DIP" scheme (yyeecchhh!!) Razz Razz Razz Razz Razz Razz

Perhaps the driver is recalling the old days, when the buses were still sporting that classic green and fancy script lettering.........

It would seem that front roll sign, and possibly the side one as well, both date to when #5334 and 324 others like it first entered service in 1964-65. The 'TH' over the 12 on the front roll sign is a giveaway of that. (The last GM New Looks to bear that same script type on 'Tee-Yay' buses was the 1963 set 3601-3950, the last buses in general to do so were the 1964-65 and 1965-66 Flxibles.)

Meaning the newer #5364, the Blitz rebuild from the 1972-73 set . . . I also wonder if that B/O (bus operator) was also longing for the days when what until 1974 was (QM)15 went through 57th Street between Madison and 3rd Avenues on N/EB runs, and between 2nd and 5th Avenues on S/WB runs. When would their route to the Queensboro Bridge have been moved to 59th Street, and from the QB to 60th?

W.B.:

As always, greatly appreciate your input and comments! Wink

I hope you don't mind my asking this question (I am also directing this to MaBSTOA 15): HOW in the heck did you get so knowledgeable on not only the specific bus orders (and their respective assignments through the years), and, also, HOW were you able to glean so much "in depth" information on roller curtains (fonts/readings.splices, etc.)?? Shocked Shocked

Again, this ALL the more reason WHY we need a good, solid, highly-detailed, lavishly illustrated, comprehensive work on NYCTA (and MaBSTOA) buses.....the history of the buses is truly mind-boggling, when you come right down to it (not that it takes all that much to boggle MY mind!) Rolling Eyes

All kidding assigned, one also wishes they could go back to any time from the 1950's through the early 80's, and, perhaps over an ice-cold orange drink and a hot dog (mustard and relish, please!) at a local Nedick's, and sit down with several of the fellows who were then driving the buses, and listen intently to their accounts of their jobs......surely, no one will be talking about Metrocards!!!!!! Wink

Regardless of skin color, these hard-working guys sure would have some interesting stories to relate.......... Very Happy

Just had to post this one here......

This scene from 1974 is quite interesting; here we see #6456 threading its way through the rows of now-redundant columns, which, until the previous year, supported the Bronx portion of the 3rd Avenue El (service in Manhattan ended in 1955)

Note that the bus is signed "special"; that small font looks quite lost on the vast expanse of blank roller curtain! Shocked
