Thanks, also, for telling me that the IND had black conductors during the 1930's; as much as I've researched the IND over the years, and as many old IND photos I have seen over the years, I've not yet once come across any showing an African-American conductor.

I'm afraid I overreached my statement of black employment history. I wasn't alive at that time, and I cannot yet find in the NY Times archives a reference to hiring practices at the Independent. I'll have to retrieve "In Transit" from the Franklin Square library. |

No problem, my friend.
I WILL be interested in whatever you find, though........

There's a LOT of nostalgia in this one (Ave. H & Flatbush Avenue, 1972).......

This topic brought some very happy memories of a a bus driver that I befriended. Better yet, he befriended me...
He was an African-American driver for MaBSTOA on route 15, Jackson Heights. His name was Robinson and his badge was #1489.
He started his career with New York City Omnibus.
A perfect gentleman always courteous and had a kind word, or greeting for his passengers. During Christmas he would welcome passengers with "Season's Greetings" Wished everyone a good morning or good night.
I would always arranged to make sure I was on his runs and that made the trip worthwhile.
He eventually transferred to the 106, 42nd Street Crosstown line and I only saw him, or rode with, sporadically.
Fast forward some 40 years and low and behold what did I find on EBay?... the original green MaBSTOA badge with #1489! Now proudly displayed on my bookcase. |

WOW!!!!!
What are the odds of you ending up with "Robinson's" old badge??
I LOVE stories with HAPPY endings!!!!!!!!!
There were two African-American bus drivers from New Jersey I once knew quite well, and both were great fellows and treated every passenger as a family member.
"Mike" (who looked like an older Eddie Murphy) started with PSNJ in the 60's, and was still with NJT into the early 1990's; he drove the #181 (ex-PS #21) to the Hoboken PATH tubes; I rode with him every morning for several years; we also exchanged Christmas gifts.
As I got on his bus at the beginning of the line, he allowed me to get on board (ESPECIALLY welcome on a windy, raw, rainy, or snowy day!) and keep warm and we'd just sit and enjoy a good conversation.
During the winter, we'd usually treat each other to a coffee or a hot chocolate from the adjacent convenience store......a great way to start the day!
The last gift he gave me before he retired was his old PS uniform jacket (it fit me to a "T"!), as well as his PS uniform cap (he lost the bade, somehow, over the years) and his driver's ID plate from PS.
WOW!!!!!!
WHAT A GIFT!!!!
I have the jacket and cap in plastic in the closet, but his PSNJ ID plate is proudly displayed on one of my (numerous!) bus shelves.
Sadly, I lost his address years ago and was never able to get in touch with him when he retired.
The other driver was "Leroy", who could have been another "Cedric The Entertainer"!
He was another old late PS/TNJ-era vet, and I got to know him well after 9/11, when I could no longer take the PATH tubes from lower Manhattan.
I would take either the IRT or IND up from Wall Street to the PABT, and dash to catch his bus (NJT #159R); we got to know one another well enough that he knew my schedule.....if he didn't see me on the bus at my usual "appointed" time, he would begin slowly to pull away from the platform......veeerrrrryyy slowly............in case he saw me making a last-minute dash......a TRUE gentleman!
I retired in 2003, but saw him in my area a few years back, buying bottled water at a local store; he aged but little since the last time we had met, and had a great little talk, until he had to "weigh anchor" on his deadhead run up to Fort Lee (he was driving a NEOPLAN artic by this late date)
The first Christmas I was riding home with him, I bought him a bottle of brandy, which I knew he appreciated (he wasn't expecting a gift, but, boy, was he happy!)
After he came back from vacation a few weeks later, he had a gift for me......an old PSNJ "TAKE ONE" holder, from one of the Fishbowls!
Mike, Leroy, wherever you are....THANK YOU!
"NYO"

Another nostalgic 'Where'd it all go?" scene; this refreshingly enticing wintertime scene dates to 1972, and was taken at 2nd Avenue & 125th St.
Note the dapper driver, looking quite smart!
Also, note the other "Tee-Yay" bus in the right background (that car parked on the left REALLY took a good hit, somewhere!!)

Where would subways be without a third rail?
Where would a streetcar be without its trolley ("troller")?
Allow me, then, the pleasure of introducing you to Mr. Granville T. Woods*.......
