While we are briefly on the subject of BRT/BMT el trains using overhead wires, I though I post these vintage views of a long-ago era of rapid transit in New York.......

This rare photo is one I wanted to share here.....

Note the lead car (an R-16) of this BMT Canarsie train at Rockaway Parkway; the car was painted gold for the Fifth Avenue Golden Jubilee Celebration*.

Also, note that the old BRT line poles are still intact long the line, and carrying non-trolley wires/cables.....

BMT 8th AVENUE (Canarsie line) terminal, 1969.

This classic scene virtually explodes with nostalgia; the "AB" Standards and IND "Arnines", classic signage and vintage station fixtures galore.

Note one of the signs over the stairwell:

"NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT AUTHORITY TRAINING CENTER: USE STAIRWAY P-6"

This great old sign would command a BIG price tag today, if it still existed!!!!Shocked Shocked

This circa-mid 1930's Atlantic Avenue (Brooklyn) scene is too good not to share here.

A lot going on here (note the grade crossings, gates, towers, etc. beneath the elevated BMT tracks); what a awesome model scene this would make! Very Happy

Note the bus on the right; it appears to be a MACK Model "30".

1969 was still some years in the future when this photo was snapped at the BMT's 36th St. shops/yards.

Here is a veritable sea of Old Looks, keeping company with a number of ex-SIRT ME-1's (these cars, as you know, were purchased by the "Tee-Yay" after the SIRT abandoned passenger service on the Arlington and South Beach lines)

After refurbishment, the cars entered BMT service, and ran for several years until being retired about 1961.

Some then became yard offices are MOW equipment.

Man, to see so many Old Looks in ONE place today....... Rolling Eyes Wink

Those are GM model TDH-4510.

They became my favorite bus model once they were operated by MaBSTOA!

MaBSTOA 15:

Thanks for the info! Wink

In ALL honesty, I have to admit, I never saw a MaBSTOA bus that I didn't like! Very Happy

Though Mom and I mostly took subway excursions when I was growing up (eons ago!), I do recall several MaBSTOA jaunts, all aboard Old Looks.

I always thought that the fancy "MaBSTOA" script over the windows gave the buses that little extra touch of "class"..... Wink

Here is another view taken at 36th St. yards (looks to be taken on the same day as the previous photo) that I think you'll enjoy...... Wink

Date this one to 1954.

In addition to the buses, there is also much of interest here.

Note only one ex-SIRT ME-1 has been repainted; also, note the "Q" cars which then operated on the 3rd Avenue El......

Another photo snapped 15 years prior to 1969......

A lot of nostalgia here: note the FORD bus underneath the Culver el, as well as the B&QT streetcar safety island streetcar station.

Those classic autos would certainly make for a fine vintage car show today.......

In 1955, when this TWIN COACH stood "front and center" for the photographer, 1969 was still 14 years into the future.

This photo was snapped at W. 8th St......

1969 was already four years in the past when this timeless scene was caught on camera at Gun Hill Road*.

Such a scene, as is depicted here, could never be duplicated again......

*Also, note the "M" MTA insignia displayed on the rear ad rack; the KENT placard on the side of the bus also further dates this now-nostalgic photo.

Before there was MaBSTOA (and 1969 was still a good number of years into the future), there were, instead, snorting, growling red-and-cream buses emblazoned with "RIDE THE SURFACE WAY" above their windows (149th ST., at the 3rd Avenue El station)........

It's been 11 years since 1969......but.....on a bright, sunny day, with two-tone blue New Looks on the job, while a BMT "Standard" fan trip rumbles by overhead at Marcy Avenue......the present day still held some "magic", at least for the transit fans of the day...... Wink

Only six more years until 1969....but....for the moment....Fishbowls in "Tee-Yay" green, and BMT "Standards", all still in regular service....and all seems right with the world....for now......

(note those classic 1950's/early 1960's autos!)
