1963 was a watershed year in the then-year old MaBSTOA, in that they received the first 255 in an order of new buses that, by 1973, replaced the entire fleet of buses inherited the year before from Fifth Avenue Coach, New York City Omnibus, and Surface Transportation / Surface Transit.
The buses were scattered amongst four depots, two in the Bronx (one of which was confirmed to be West Farms, the other either Kingsbridge or Coliseum) and two in Manhattan (Amsterdam and 132nd Street). The WF, AMS and OTS roll signs are documented; but still wanting are pics of other Bx- routes to determine if KB or COL got the other share of the buses when new.
The front roll signs differed from those on subsequent orders in that there was the route number at left, plus the route description at top right and its end destination at bottom right. In later years, signs from these first buses would be recycled and placed on buses within the 1964-65 (5201-5525), 1965-66 (6401-6900) and 1966-67 (8301-8780) orders, all of which will be shown - and all pics courtesy bus.nycsubway.org.
First, buses with 1963 roll signs from West Farms:

Bus 6614 on Bx-29 run, 1972:

Then, buses with 1963 roll signs from Amsterdam:
Bus 3446 on M-104 run, 1972:

Bus 6628 on M-104 run, 1972:

Bus 8456 on M-100 run, 1970:
https://bus.nycsubway.org/perl/show?2830
Finally, from the 132nd Street depot:
Bus 3302 on M-3 run, 1969:
https://bus.nycsubway.org/perl/show?838
Bus 8466 on another M-3 run, 1969:
https://bus.nycsubway.org/perl/show?1084
Bus 8674 on M-5 run, 1972:

Can anyone who grew in the Bronx "back then," advise as to which other routes had those type signs, thus giving a hint as to what other depot/garage besides WF, AMS and OTS got the 3301-3555 flock initially? |

I used to ride the BX12 every school day in late 1975. I recall riding aboard TDH-5303s with COL stenciled on their fareboxes. I seem to recall they had one-piece front roll signs that read "BX12 to City Island" or "BX12 to Sedgwick Ave". If I recall correctly, the newer fishbowls (in 2 tone MTA blue livery) usually had 2 piece front roll signs: the curb side sign showed the route number and name in white figures on a dark blue curtain, while the street side one had the destination in white letters on a red background. |
