I'd give anything to go back in time and witness timeless and classic "meets" (St. Nicholas & 162nd St., 1983) such as this.
Man, what we took for granted.......

This one's a real gem; though Flex #7326 was, of course, the subject of the photographer, the CAREY PD-4104 made this wonderful 1974 photo (snapped at 37th & 2nd Ave.) a real classic......
(also note the Flex driver sporting a tie!)

I meant to ask: Does anyone know when M16 buses to West 42nd Street started traveling via 8th Avenue? (They had from time immemorial gone there via 10th Avenue until some time in the '80's.)
That was the Flx order where every single bus made for MaBSTOA (7300-7361) went to Hudson, and were mainstays of that depot till . . . |

Must've been taken in earlier 1974 . . . front roll signs from later in the year had 'M' in a smaller type size than the route number. |

W.B.:
Yet again, you bring to light ( once again) as to why there is a strong need for a detailed work on MABSTOA; most people (and probably a number of bus enthusiasts also) have not the slightest clue about the many variations in roll signs over the years.
With any given bus route (here and elsewhere), there were many variations in lettering, numbering, font style, readings, etc (subway roller curtains are often discussed in great detail by rapid transit buffs)
Personally, I never cared for when the transition to lower-case lettering (both on the buses and subways) was introduced. I always thought that "all caps" looked more traditional, but also, found the "all caps" much easier to read.
I feel likewise about lettering on subway station and bus stop signs.
As on rapid transit, I am sure (not only in New York) there were readings on roller curtains that were seldom (if ever) used
For instance, on the IND, the "HH" reading ("FULTON ST. LOCAL") was used until 1946, when the Court St. shuttle was abandoned.
In the early 60's, the "HH" reading was dusted off and used once more, this time for Rockaway trains (recall, also, the "QB", "QJ", "KK", etc.)
To me, it seemed that "all caps" style-roller curtains were much easier to read than lower case (the digital signs on the subway cars today is a joke, especially the tiny route number/letter at the ends of the cars, replacing the big, distinctive roller curtain readings of decades ago;recall the HUGE "alphabet soup" letters that came into use on the subways with the debut of the R-40's in the late 60's?
No difficulty in making out lettering THAT huge........

New Look (GM) #8325, patiently awaiting passengers at Grand Concourse & Fordham Rd., circa 1970.
Again, note the large, easy-to-decipher lettering on the roller curtain; also of note, the old "BUS STOP" sign, which was a relic even then.........

MABSTOA Flex #7844 at Bainbridge Avenue & 206th, 1982.
The "NY TELEPHONE" van on the right really takes you back in time!
