June, 1981......

A WAMATA Flex is seen here pulling out of the St. George terminal, trailed by a MTA Fishbowl (note the old canopied walkway on the left)........

Here's an interesting page on the St. George terminal (there is also good historical coverage here)

There are also a few modern-era bus photos (one shows a portion of the St. George bus "control tower" I had mentioned in my initial post)

Interesting, too, that only half of the SIRT tracks at the terminal are used for revenue service; the other half are not used in regular service, and are used for train storage.........

In Theodore W. Scull's "THE STATEN ISLAND FERRY" (Quandrant Press, 1982) there is a spectacular aerial view (on page #39) of the St. George terminal, dating from 1931.

The original streetcar/bus approach ramps and elevated forecourt are dead center; there was a three-story structure in the middle of the loop area, which might have been used for offices/etc. related to the streetcar/bus operations.

You can see both streetcars and buses in this view; the separate platform areas for the Tottenville/South Beach and Arlington trains is also clearly seen; a good number of SIRT trains are also prominent in this photo.

No less than nine ferryboats are seen in this photo; one is about to pull into the terminal, its trip from Manhattan nearly over.

Two 39th St. boats are in their respective slips, and a number of other "city" ferries are berthed at what was then the extensive maintenance base for the ferries (an elderly sidewheel ferry is also on hand in this view)

It is also interesting to note that there was then only one vehicular ramp (for both entering and exiting vehicles) for both the Manhattan and the 39th St. boats, unlike the 1951 terminal...........

(Note the Old Look heading west from the St. George terminal in this 1970 view)

This was when the SIRT was preparing f;or the eventual delivery of the R-44 cars, which would replace all of the venerable 1925 ME-1 cars; note the old IND R-1 car that has been rebuilt into a clearance tester, at the head of a cut of the old ME-1's........

Great shot, thanks for posting that link!

I didn't know that the ME-1's could MU with R-1's...

traildriver:

Neither did I, until I saw that photo, some years back! Shocked

Of course, there is the possibility that either the former IND R-1 was de-motorized, or, in another scenario, some sort of adapter was used to allow the two types of cars to operate together.

Interestingly, though the ME-1's were, in part, based on the BMT "AB" Standards, it was found that, when the NYCTA purchased a number of ME-1's after the SIRT shut down passenger service on the South Beach and Arlington lines, the ME-1's were unable to MU with the BMT cars (this was due to different braking systems)..........

St. George, 1974.

In the background can be seen the old bus/streetcar approach ramp; at far left a SI boat is laying over in one of the old west lay-up slips.

In the foreground, sitting in the snowy, empty B&O freight yard, a cut of recently retired SIRT ME-1's silently, and sadly, await their appointment with the cutting torch.

This is a very different scene today, from recent photos I have seen.....

A 1940's view of the eastern SIRT platforms, that then served the Tottenville and South Beach trains; note that semaphore signals are in use to control train movements.

The one-car train was most likely a South Beach train.

Today, this scene would be impossible to photograph, as the SIRT tracks and platforms have, for nearly 70 years, been covered over by the new bus lanes and approaches.

The terminal itself is just out of the photo on the far left; note, also, the slips for the 39th St. ferries, and, on the far right, are lay-up slips......

Another St. George view, this one from 2004.

This photo appears to be taken when the terminal was being renovated (note the bus platforms above the SIRT trains).........

Harway Avenue is in Brooklyn, not Staten Island.

Joe:

I have to admit, I THOUGHT that photo was taken in Brooklyn, but, as the photo was grouped among a number of Staten Island photos, I thought that whoever "positioned" the photo where it was knew a lot more than I did, and not have a Brooklyn photo lumped in with Staten Island photos! Shocked Shocked

Anyway, thanks for the heads-up! Wink

Still, that photo is indeed a glimpse into the past, today in 2019.........

I have a circa-1963 postcard that features a panoramic view of the St. George terminal, showing a VERY busy period! Shocked

The bus platforms and approaches are teeming with Old Looks and MACKS (no less than 18 are on hand!)

Two of the slips are occupied by "DONGAN HILLS" class ferries, and a "MISS NEW YORK" class boat has just departed for Manhattan.

A 69th St. boat is seen waiting to load, while another approaches from Brooklyn.

Long lines of autos and trucks (Man, what an antique car show these vehicles would make today!) waiting to board the ferries, especially the 69th St. boats.

The SIRT interlocking tower is clearly visible, but no trains are to be seen.

Does this old postcard ever bring back a lot of great childhood memories for yours truly....... Very Happy

The card was distributed by :

Too good not to include here..... Wink

Clearly indeed, quite a bit off the "proverbial" beaten track (home territory, Kennedy Boulevard, Bayonne/Jersey City), but not far from St. George, we see a battered Old Look ( B-8 ) at Clifton, adjacent to the elevated SIRT station.

No sign is displayed; this might have been a fan trip.

Also, note the billboard for the Staten Island Savings Bank, showing one of the 1860's sidewheel ferryboats.

I knew these old tanks very well, from childhood into adulthood....and I STILL miss them today.......
