More Macks than you can wag a bull dog at...
Pictured here are approximately 115 Mack C-45-DT built in 1948. This photo appears in Guy E. Martin's book, New York City Transit Buses, 1945-1975 Photo Archive.
The problem is in the caption... He has the photo in the section for Surface Transportation and were acquired to replace the TARs streetcars in the Bronx. As well as an aging IRT train on the elevated structure.
They are indeed painted in Surface Transportation colors but, if you look closely, you'll see the BoT's circular logo underneath the driver's window. These 115 Macks were ordered by Surface for their routes in Yonkers. Surface defaulted on the payments and the buses were sold to the BoT (1949-1950) and were delivered in Surface colors and eventually repainted into the BoT's silver and green color scheme. They were renumbered in the BoTs 5000-5114 series. They worked the Bot's Manhattan routes and later would share the City streets with the 5200 series Mack C-50s.
Way to the left of the picture we see some scrapped prewar Twins.
The elevated train is not in the Bronx but over Roosevelt Avenue, that is the #7, Flushing Line. The square building by the scrapped Twins is the IRT power house. On the other side of the train, some 10 years later would be the home turf for the Amazing New York Mets!
And, oh yes, that is the Flushing Depot yard, now the Casey Stengel Depot. In fact, during the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair this yard would be the parking lot for charter buses.

MaBSTOA 15:
That awesome MACK panorama scene also graces page #42 in "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT BUSES" (Guy E. Martin)
You mentioned the elevated subway train on the IRT Flushing line; note the prewar IRT cars; between 1948 and 1950, these cars would be transferred to the IRT "main lines", replaced by the new R-12/R-14's (ACF, 1948/1949) and the R-15's (ACF, 1950)
These new cars, also, were the first to usher in route numbers in their end sign boxes on the IRT division.
You mentioned the Mets (I had totally forgotten that Shea Stadium is no longer standing!); somehow, today's Mets do not seem as "at home" as they (the "ol tyme Mets") did in Shea. Ray Romano made many references to the "old tyme Mets" many times during the run of "Everybody Loves Raymond")
As to the new SURFACE Macks.....it DOES seem a bit strange to see them in "foreign territory" (Queens), instead of plying the streets of Manhattan and "da Bronx"........

Though this is NOT a bus picture, I still think you'll appreciate this classic "time warp" photo, taken back when you could still ride the classic IRT "Redbirds" out to see "The Amazin's" in action.......

Though, again (sadly!) there are no buses in this nostalgic view of the IRT's Corona yard in 1964, there is so much of "Lost Noo Yawk" here.......
The new IRT "Bluebirds" are waiting to transport the hordes of fair-goers from Times Square out to Flushing Meadow; the roofs of the "main line" R-33's seem quite scruffy, despite the cars being quite recent themselves (note the paper "7" placard in the end route number sign box)
In the background, rises the new Shea Stadium, the hallowed home of "The Amazin's" for many a year to come.
Sad to think that everything seen here (except the modernized yard, and the Flushing line itself) no longer exists today.......

Interesting to note, that, on this page that NYBS (originally New York Bus Tours, later under the Ferdinand Arrigoni, Inc. subsidiary) began running to Mets games at Shea Stadium, in 1966.
The buses operated from:
GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE TERMINAL
FORDHAM PLAZA
PARKCHESTER
The Shea Stadium buses also operated from several other locations in the Bronx.........

Fast forward some 15 years and we have the same Flushing Depot yard but this time serving as a charter bus parking lot for the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair.
We can't see Shea Stadium in this view nor do we see any "Bluebirds" on the el tracks but we see the old IRT powerhouse.
The two buses in the foreground are...
Red and Tan, GM TDH 4512
Trailways, GM PD-4101 (with a two-piece windshield replacing the original one piece)
PLus, at least four un-identifiable PD-4104s, one PD 4106 by the el structure.
The rest are all Public Service GM buses: TDM-5108s, SDM-5301s, PD-4104, TDH-5304s, etc.
But alas, no non-GMs are visible.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Like the Mets, this classic photo is "AMAZIN'"!!!!!!!!
What a bus museum these vehicles would have made today!!
Sadly, we will never see the likes of such a diverse gathering such as this ever again.
Those big suburban Old Looks sure bring back a lot of great memories; my memories of the PSNJ 4014's always speaks of Shore trips and charter work.
The TRAILWAYS PD-4101 is a great "bonus", here!
You know have me wondering if anyone snapped bus lot-area photos on the day that the "Amazing Mets" played their first game at Shea;today, with the old Shea Stadium now gone (like the IRT "Bluebirds"/"Redbirds") and classic buses like those in your photo long since vanished, today's Citi Field bus area would indeed present a much different view.
Again, thanks for posting this "AMAZIN" photo!
(Man, do I feel OLD as the hills, being able to recall such vintage buses!)
