It must have been very uncomfortable to seat behind or across from the turnstile.

The bus in question is a Brooklyn Bus Corp Twin model 30 of 1931 vintage.

LOVE these ancient, "low-tech" bus interior photos!!!! Very Happy

This view reminds me of the photos I've seen of Brooklyn streetcars which also were equipped with turnstiles, next to the motorman.

METROCARDS were still many, many light years away when this photo was snapped!! Shocked

I see the numbers also came of great use well into the 1980's on MaBSTOA and 'Tee-Yay' buses on the inside, especially for the bus numbers.

W.B.:

Bus numbers displayed inside the vehicle itself was indeed something we all simply took for granted, back in the day.

I well recall the numbers displayed (quite bold, from what I can remember) displayed on the bulkhead over the driver's area of the local "Joisey" buses I grew up with.

I can also remember, on some of the "indy" buses in my area, long, long ago, where interior numbers were displayed over the rear windows as well (this I remember with Old Looks and MACKS).......

You can really see the BMT influence in the installation of turnstiles (called "passimeters") in the Brooklyn Bus photo.

I was thinking the same thing.

It is hard to imagine that there was a time, a century ago, when the subways were not equipped with turnstiles; manned ticket-choppers were utilized until the mass installation of modern nickle-in-the-slot turnstiles in the 1920's.

The IND, on the other hand (the first "modern" subway"), of course, used turnstiles right from the start, in 1932.

Interestingly, turnstiles (nor gap fillers) were never installed at the IRT's City Hall loop station; ticket choppers were used right up until the station was closed in 1945......

*Even today, I still cannot picture the subway without the time-honored TOKEN! Shocked

Even the Perey turnstiles ventured across the seas... here's a front engine bus in Madrid with a turnstile. Note the coin tray on top of the engine hatch and the stick shift!

MOST unusual!!!!!!!!! Shocked

Interesting that PSNJ, when converting streetcars over to one-man operation, never experimented with turnstiles (they did also use tokens for years)

My favorite subway turnstiles where those with the thick wooden arms, especially the oldest ones on the IRT.

I remember these into the 1990's at a few locations, especially Wall St. on the Lexington Avenue line (Brooklyn-bound platform); you'd drop a token into the slot, and you'd hear a loud "SNAP!", and then you (literally) would "clunk" your way through the turnstiles! Wink

Well into the the 80's, I remember the 1930's BMT-type turnstiles at the Broad St. station (and old "chopper box" was also on hand, being used to store bags of tokens)

Ahhh, memories! Very Happy
