"SO A STREETCAR WALKS INTO A DRUGSTORE"

Though not bus-related, I thought I would post this from my files, as I have mentioned accidents involving Brooklyn streetcars in a previous post.

This article dates to 1931; the unfortunate, wayward streetcar seen in the 1931 derailment photo was a 5100 series car, which, like its sister cars, began life as a trailer and was later motorized......

Two accidents involving to Queen Mary's, #s2004 and 2141 that apparently hit the pillars holding up the el.

Eighth Avenue Coach Company/New York City Omnibus #866 hit ahead of the rear door and bent almost into a "V" pushed into a storefront. Note the "V" for victory on the front of the tow truck.

To a lesser degree, what appears to be simple fender benders, for the buses that is.

New York City Omnibus #2791, GM TDH-4509

Surface Transportation #1732, Mack C-45-DT

New York City Omnibus, Yellow Coach model 740, looks like it wanted to attend church services

MaBSTOA 15:

I am very happy with myself for starting this topic; otherwise, we might not have seen this spectacular (if sobering) collection of vintage bus accident photos.....again, thanks for the time in locating these photos and posting here. Wink

Regarding the photos with the El pillars; I know I have read that many motorists (to this day) are not at all fond of El pillars, especially along busy thoroughfares.

Likewise, I've heard that motorists also. had a strong dislike for streetcar rails.

FACCo's first "Queen Mary" double deckers entering service were those that were to run on the Jackson Heights route; for obvious reasons, these nine buses had lower profiles than the other buses which came later on the other routes.

Again, a truly amazing collection of rare photos....thanks again.....

The dominating presence of "El" pillars clearly overshadow both buses and autos, in these 1950's views, taken in Brooklyn and Manhattan.......

Here we see MTA Fishbowl #3721 at Parsons & Jamaica, in 1978.

The rusting, now-useless columns from the demolished BMT Jamaica El were, for a time, still standing, time-scarred, mute reminders of another era.....

In an older, but similar, scene, we see MABSTOA #6456 (signed "SPECIAL") passing beneath the now-redundant columns of the Bronx section of the 3rd Avenue El, which remained in service until 1973.

This interesting (but melancholy) view dates to 1974, when the remains of the venerable old El were being dismantled.

Though motorists (and bus drivers) I am sure, did not shed any tears on the loss of the El and its columns, scenes such as this one indeed evoke a strong sense of an era lost.......
