traildriver:

The following is from an old book I have on the PRSL (author unknown):

"..........competition between the PRR and the Reading on the highways also ended when the PRSL was formed. The PRR's bus service was then being operated by 'PENNSYLVANIA GREYHOUND LINES'......."

".........the schedules of GREYHOUND and READING TRANSPORTATION were coordinated, and became interchangeable, and the Philadelphia terminals of both railroads were served by the runs....."

"...........these operations were performed on behalf of the 'PENNSYLVANIA-READING MOTOR LINES' , a corporate umbrella that held ICC and PUC rights....."

".........PRML came into existence in August of 1933, as a PRSL subsidiary. The following March, arrangements were made for Public Service to buy the operating rights for the seashore bus service out of Philadelphia....."

".......the train connection bus routes between Ocean City and Sea Isle City and between Cape May Court House and and Avalon via Stone Harbor, were, of course,. train-dependent. This situation, of course, was not at all attractive to Public Service......"

"...... PRSL continued to own these lines, but contracted with Public Service to operate them, starting in July of 1934; railroad tickets were honored on these buses until these services were abandoned thirty-six seasons later........"

Also:

"FIRLIN SHORE LINES" began operation when the Delaware River (Ben Franklin) Bridge opened in 1926.

The buses were operated by the "FIRLIN CORPORATION", headquartered at Market & Water Sts. in Philadelphia; their sole route operated between Philadelphia and Atlantic City.

Their WHITE Model 50B buses carried luggage on the roof, as did the the YELLOW "Camelbacks" that PS used on their Atlantic City routes.

These buses earned the nickname "Camelback" because of the distinctive roof hump over the aisle, to increase headroom.....

Though these photos focus on Atlantic City's streetcars, the buses in the background are indeed of interest.......

..............in mentioning Atlantic City and inter-city bus transportation, it is important to remember that, for decades, not only was Atlantic City THE New Jersey summer resort, but also, a city where many businesses and corporations held their annual conventions.

Back in the day, for example, the PRSL operated lengthy trains for convention goers; Shriners' trains were very popular for many years.

PSNJ issued postcards hailing its Atlantic City services; I have a postcard showing a PS 4104 superimposed on an ocean view of Atlantic City (circa early 60's?)

The AC terminal was located at Bacharach Boulevard and Tennessee Avenue; round trip fare between the PABT and AC was then $5.20.

From the mid-60's onwards, AC slid more and more into urban decay, including the once-grand and palatial hotels and the famous boardwalk.

The casino revolution literally jump-started the city and its tourist attractions, and bus operators were indeed pleased with this turning of the tide.

In recent years, however, the tide has once again turned, and many long-established casinos have been shuttered.

AMTRAK abandoned its runs to AC a number of years ago, and NJT's "ACES" special (from New York and Newark) also has since vanished.

It will be interesting to see how bus operators to and from AC adapt to the last downturn for the once great resort town.....

See........

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_City_Bus_Terminal

* Note that (at the time this page was posted) GREYHOUND had six routes to AC; it would be interesting, also, to see how the charter carriers have fared as of a late, with many casinos closing.......

Note here that, in 1929, the B&O formed a subsidiary bus company, the WEST VIRGINIA TRANSPORTATION COMPANY, which was sold to GREYHOUND in 1955.

This page is a great source of info on railroad-owned bus lines.......

*also interesting to note is that, in 1927, the CRRNJ formed the subsidiary JERSEY CENTRAL TRANSPORTATION COMPANY, which was sold to SOMERSET in 1957.

The Jolly Tar Trails buses were mentioned in an earlier post as well as Jersey Central and Reading Transportation

First is an ACF Jolly Tar Trails bus operated by the Jersey Central

Secondly is a Mack BK of Reading Transportation

Thirdly, a Yellow Coach PG-2904 of Jersey Central at the Public Service Terminal in Newark.

These three photos came from the May 1972 issue of Motor Coach Age. This issue tells the story of Reading Transportation and the MaBSTOA, the First Ten Years, 1962-1972.

More on Reading Transportation

First, a publicity photo taken at the Franklin Street Station showing Reading's fleet of Ford Transits model 09B, Flxible "Clipper" model 29BR-140, and Yellow Coach PG-2901

Secondly, a GM TDH-4008, #3803

Lastly, a GM PDA-3704 and ironically numbered 3704.l

These three photos came from the May 1972 issue of Motor Coach Age. This issue tells the story of Reading Transportation and the MaBSTOA, the First Ten Years, 1962-1972.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

I HAVE seen two or three very early photos of READING buses, but have never seen the ones you posted; also, I have never seen a photo showing a "Jolly Tar" bus, before today!

That READING PG-2904 sporting the CNJ "Liberty Herald" blew my mind (what's left of it!!!)

NEVER saw anything like that before!!! Shocked Shocked

A late buddy of mine (a HUGE CNJ enthusiast like myself, and a former hobby shop owner) would have went NUTS for that photo!! Shocked Shocked

THANKS AGAIN for sharing these AWESOME old photos.......... Very Happy

Not in Jersey City but at Rockefeller Center waiting for passengers, a White model 1136 of 1950 vintage.
