WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked

An OUTSTANDING collection of photos; thanks heaps for posting here!! Very Happy

I have to admit, I was quite astounded by the variety of vehicles used, including some actual buses!

In my area, the "cookie cutter" Fords indeed dominate; you see little else in the general area.

SPHINX has obviously been around for many years; I retired in 2003, and I well recall seeing SPHINX vehicles both on Boulevard East and at Nungessers.

BTW:

Regarding subway lines coming into New Jersey:

Back in the early days of the H&M (today's PATH) there were plans to extend the H&M south from Jersey City through Bayonne, and then, through a new set of tubes, to Staten Island.

Also, the lower level of the GWB (which did not open until the early 1960's) was originally intended to carry trains of the then-new IND 8th Avenue subway across the span via the lower level and into a new multi-modal terminal at Fort Lee.

Alas, too much red tape (as well as the Great Depression) killed that grandoise plan.

Again, AWESOME photos.......appreciate your sharing here!Wink

As also, I suspect, did auto-oriented "master builder" Robert Moses.

W.B.:

Agreed 100%.

I have read that Mr. Moses (may he rest) did not relish buses on his new "parkways", and the overpasses were built too low to allow buses transporting "low-class city folks" to pass under.

I also have read that he killed ideas to have the SIRT extended over the lower level of the then-abuilding VZ Bridge (back in the 20's, construction was actually started on tunnels that would have linked the SIRT (then a B&O subsidiary) to the BMT's 4th Avenue subway in Brooklyn, allowing Staten Island residents a one-seat ride into Manhattan (at that time, the BMT's Manhattan terminal was Chambers St., then a bustling transportation hub)

Tunnel headings, to this day, exist near the BMT's 59th St. station in Brooklyn.

Mayor LaGuardia DESPISED both streetcars and elevateds (and was QUITE vocal on the subject!); all streetcars were to be gone from Manhattan by 1960; of course, the last TARS cars in Manhattan were replaced by SURFACE buses not long after WW2.

I recall seeing a subway documentry years ago, where they mentioned the state of neglect that the subways had fallen into into by the 1960's, since Mr. Moses was not one to spend money on "mass transit for the masses", when that money could be used for more road projects.

The Cross-Bronx, when it was being built literally cut a huge swath through the borough, wiping out many homes and businesses.

Just imagine what subway extensions might have been built back in those days, had Moses been a "transit friendly" type of fellow.

Perhaps, JUST perhaps, the Second Avenue line would not be merely a "stubway" today...........

"Robert Moses and the decline of the New York Subway System"

(subway buffs will LOVE the classic 1940's-era BMT rush hour scene depicted at the top of the page!) Wink

This is a very interesting article........

Just a quick thought, here......

It would be interesting to at least remotely figure just how much revenue NJT loses from potential riders taking the jitney vans.

I am sure the numbers would be quite substantial, IMHO, especially when one factors in that jitneys have been competing with NJT for at least two decades now, at least............

Except, perhaps, to their drivers and riders, jitneys are (not surprisingly) pretty much the bane of motorists and city bus drivers.

I have heard many (non=flattering!) monikers for the vans, most of which cannot be shared here! Shocked Shocked

Some of the "milder" ones are "Roach Coaches" and "Tijuana Taxis". Rolling Eyes

To date, I have not met a solitary sole (be it a pedestrian, motorist, or NJT driver) who has anything at all positive to say about the jitneys.

Small wonder........ Rolling Eyes
