Not for now . . . but I can say where it was taken: 42nd Street and 10th Avenue, just outside the West Side Airlines Terminal. Where the parking lot across the street stood, is now the Manhattan Plaza apartment complex. (And yet another luxury high rise has since been put up where the West Side Airlines Terminal once was.)[/img] |
W.B.:
Thanks......
At least I know now where the photo was taken!

Wonder why the caption says NYC Transit as owner? |

IIRC, that was some kind of demonstration project to replace trains on some branch line or other....not sure. I also don't recall if it actually ran in regular service or not, nor for how long, if it did......
I did find this explanation online...

What is that, a Staten Island express? I never knew the TA operated from The Port....maybe it was when they took over Domenico routes? |

Back in the 70's, there was another New Look railbus experiment, this time on SEPTA's Red Arrow trolley lines.
Obviously, as in Connecticut, this experiment simply fizzled away.
I do not know if this was the same bus seen at the Branford Trolley Museum back in 1975, or a Philly-area bus fiited out as a railbus.
I think I have a pic saved somewhere; I'll see if I can find it.....

I'm guessing that you might be right; though the destination sign is blurred at best, I thought I saw an "S" designation, but cannot be sure.
All I know is that I never saw an MTA bus at the "Port"........one of the experts here can surely put this "mystery" to rest......

If New Looks could run on rails, why, then, certainly they could also run on STEAM as well??
In 1969, 4 T8H-5305A's were reported to be part of the California Steam Bus project; later, in 1972, two GM New Looks participated in the California Steam Bus Project to test the feasibility of steam propulsion in transit buses.
This project was initially set into motion in 1968 by the California State Assembly; AC TRANSIT of Oakland supplied their coach #666, a 1969 T6H-5305 with propulsion supplied by William Brobeck Engineers.
The other bus was provided by LEAR MOTORS CORPORATION, and operated by MUNI.
Obviously, the concept of modern steam transit buses did not meet with any great success........

During the oil embargo around 1973 or 4, I recall some inventor's conjured up weird pickup trucks powered by coal or wood burning steam engines. That was also when the US Department of Energy financed the building of ten Greyhound MC-8 "Turbocruiser's", powered by Allison gas turbine engines... |

traildriver:
Thanks for jogging my memory; had totally forgotten about the MC-8 "Turbocruisers"!
Speaking of "Turbocruisers", GM displayed several modern (Old Look) buses at the 1955 "POWERAMA" exhibit in Chicago; one of these buses was a TDH-4512, called the "TURBOCRUISER".
The bus featured an experimental gas turbine engine, which was then being tested by General Motors.
Through exhaustive experiments, it was found that these engines, though quite silent, were very fuel inefficient, ran very hot, and also made the bus difficult to handle.
After these experiments, the bus went back to the factory, had a conventional diesel installed, and then sold to MARTIN LINES, in Royal Oak, Michigan, where it ran in regular service for many years......

All:
Going by the photos and observations in this topic, clearly, ALL New Looks are NOT all alike!!
Yet again, all the more reason to really DELVE into GM bus history!

Scroll down page for a photo of the TDH-4512 that GM had experimented with as a "TURBOCRUISER", after it had been sold to MARTIN LINES (there other vintage bus photos on this page as well, Old Looks and Whites)............
