All:

In 1949, 44 retired PSNJ dual-powered ASV trolleybuses were sold for futher operation in Havana.

As Havana's antiquated tram system utilized double wires, the transition from rails to rubber should have been smooth.

However, only a few ex-PSNJ vehicles were tested under wire; none of the old ASV's ever ran in revenue service as trolley buses.

However, a number ran as gas buses.

There is a 1949 newspaper photo on this page (scroll down) that shows one of the ASV's in Havana.

The old tram system was both archaic and charming, in the best "Toonerville" fashion!

A number of rare and wonderful old views here..........

Bon Voyage! Very Happy

Are you heading to Havana via the graceful P&O liners? Wink

You surely will have a great time; I've always wanted to visit Havana myself; I know I'd be going camera-crazy taking pictures of all those beautiful vintage cars!

A lot of historical architecture to savor as well; many younger people today have no idea that, at one time, many US tourists traveled to Havana (by sea and air) for the swanky hotels and glittering nightlife.

While you are there, I hope you get to take a few pictures of some interesting buses! Very Happy

I also recall reading, that, in some areas, you can still see some of the old tram tracks, even though the trams are now gone almost 70 years.

PS: While in Havana, say hello to my good amigo, Ricky Ricardo (and Lucy too!) Wink

When Havana was HAVANA it had an excellent bus service!

Two private companies provided service to the metropolis, Cooperativa de Onnibus Aliados (Allied Omnibus Cooperative) and Autobuses Modernos (Modern Autobus; this company was formed by William Pawley of Miami/Miami Beach Transit) to take over the trolleys. This company became Omnibus Metropolitanos (Metropolitan Omnibus) - not to be confused with the current Havana bus operations.

Omnibus Aliados operated a vast fleet of GM TGH-3101 (100); TDH-3612 (500+); TDH-3714, TDH-4512 -- all purchased new from Pontiac. As well as some buses built in Cuba. Used TDH-4509s were also on hand.

Autobuses Modernos operated ACF-Brill C-31, C-36, C-44 and Aerocoach T-361, again, all brand new. As well as some 500+ Leyland Royal Tigers and two Leyland Titan double deckers. Ex-Miami Transit Ford Transits were used for training purposes.

Omnibus Metropolitanos inherited the Royal Tigers and purchased 201 Lryland-MCW "Olympics"

Havana Electric Railway did acquired one trolleybus, Yellow Coach model 729 from Public Service Coordinate for testing purposes. The acquisition of 44 buses never materialized.

Here are some views to wet your appetite and see what you missed!

Enjoy the blast from the past...

MaBSTOA 15:

I think you might just have TOPPED yourself with these AWESOME photos!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

In all my years of browsing through photos of vintage autos in Havana, I have NEVER (to date) seen ONE photo of any vintage buses operating in Cuba, with the exception of a few BECK Scenicruiser-knockoffs that ran there decades ago.

I also had no idea whatsoever that such a rich variety of buses once ran there; in all honesty, I never pictured Old Looks operating anywhere in Cuba (let alone double deckers!) Shocked Shocked Shocked

Again, THANK YOU for not only these great old photos, but also, some very interesting historical trivia as well........ Wink
