VERSARE........

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versare_Company

http://www.coachbuilt.com/bui/v/versare/versare.htm

(courtesy: coachbuilt)

This obscure company was headquartered in Watervliet, NY, until later being purchased by the CINCINATTI CAR COMPANY.

The VERSARE nameplate continued to be used until all production ended in 1938.

Also note the eight-wheeled "ATWATER STREET MONSTER" that ran in Montreal during the 20's and 30's.

As I had noted earlier here, SURFACE TRANSIT operated VERSARE buses during the 1930's.

These buses were quite "bizarre", to say the least, and these hulking monsters had to have been driven by "IRON MEN", to say the least.........Shocked Shocked

Imagine FACCo. or PSNJ rostering these eight-wheel monsters?? Shocked Shocked

I'm willing to wager that the drivers had NO NEED in going to a gym, after a workout behind the wheel of one of these behemoths....... Shocked

Note on the "Coachbuilt" link:

On Page 2, be sure to look for the heading:

"6-WHEEL BUSES FOR BRONX LINES"

92 VERSARE buses were to be ordered, operating out of two Bronx garages....

Many non-traction buffs usually associate TARS with only the Manhattan routes; in truth, the TARS network in the Bronx far overshadowed the lines in Manhattan.

Beyond the Bronx, as you know, TARS cars operated in Yonkers, Mount Vernon, and New Rochelle.

The bus companies that operated north of FACCo./BoT/NYCTA territory, I always felt, have rich histories and heritages of their own, and should not be ignored.

Both their buses and their operations should not be forgotten....

Indeed, a few TARS trolley routes buffering The Bronx, Yonkers, Mount Vernon and New Rochelle, ultimately converted into buses operated by other entities (especially Yonkers), had Bx- numbers assigned (but of course ultimately unused) by the NYC Bureau of Franchises c. 1940. They would have been:
- Bx-43 - Broadway-Yonkers (Rt. 2, later bustituted under Yonkers Railroad Co. later Yonkers Transit Corp.)
- Bx-44 - Jerome Avenue (gone with the wind)
- Bx-46 - Fifth Avenue-Mount Vernon (later bustituted under Westchester Street Transportation as Route C)
- Bx-47 - Mount Vernon-Subway (later bustituted under WST as Route B)
- Bx-48 - New Rochelle-Subway (later bustituted under WST as Route A)
Those were pending after the last set of Bronx bus conversions on Aug. 22, 1948 into Bx-26 - Boston Road-Morris Park Avenue, Bx-28 - Williamsbridge, Bx-31 - Southern Boulevard and Bx-40 - Tremont Avenue. No doubt the same financial difficulties encumbering Third Avenue Transit/Surface Transportation that led to many buses they ordered being diverted to the Board of Transportation to help start up their Manhattan bus operations with the former East Side Omnibus and Comprehensive Omnibus routes (and, in June 1949, TATS/STS declaring bankruptcy), had something to do with these last five routes not being converted under those numbers and STS aegis.

But there is one lingering question to all you Bronx bus experts: What was to have been Bx-45?

W,B.:

Great info, as always, and thanks for posting here.

The following is from Kramer's "ACROSS NEW YORK BY TROLLEY":

"........a bus subsidiary was formed to petition for a system of lines in the Bronx. The petition was successful, and, from a modest 12 routes in 1928, an enterprise had been created that would become the world's largest diesel bus fleet by 1942. This became the Surface Transit System....."

I have seen a number of pictures, where, just before the conversion of TARS lines to buses, where the large route placards on the dashes had the new bus route numbers applied as well; in the aforementioned book, there is a photo showing one of the last 59th St. Crosstown cars ("X" route), with"M-103" applied to the dash sign (photo was taken in 1946)......

From the same book:

".....all Manhattan and Bronx car lines were converted to buses by August of 1948, and in Mount Vernon and New Rochelle by 1950. Only the Yonkers lines remained, and they too were gone by November, 1952......"

Look carefully on the upper left here and you'll see the lead diesel on the "AMERICAN FREEDOM TRAIN", under NH catenary.

A TARS car operating on route "T" is just below......

Some location information about the listed photos.
I grew up in Mt. Vernon 1951-1963. 1st Avenue and 3rd Street

http://bus.nycsubway.org/perl/show?3393
This is in Mt.Vernon at the corner of 5th avenue and 1st Street

http://www.newdavesrailpix.com/tars/htm/tarsfp054.htm
Mount Vernon at 2nd avenue and 1st Street. The Daily Argus building is on the corner.
You can see the pedestrian bridge going over the New Haven tracks to the Mount Vernon station. I think it is called Mt. Vernon East now.

This is the New Rochelle terminus of the "A" line. A previous post mentioned
Bx-48 - New Rochelle-Subway (later bustituted under WST as Route A)
There is a taxi stand there. It is across from the New Rochelle train station. I worked in NR in 1990 and took a walk to that very spot.

kdr3bt:

Thanks for sharing this historic location info; it really helps in trying to "fine tune" the area shown in a photo that is now decades old.

Did you notice my post regarding the VERSARE buses operated by ST?

In all my years of transit research, I have only seen ONE photo showing a ST bus; this is in the book "ACROSS NEW YORK BY TROLLEY", and the bus is only a "background" vehicle at that.

IMHO, this bus type had to be the most obscured (and least photographed) of all transit buses that once operated within the Five Boroughs........

Here is a photo of a VERSARE trolley bus in Salt Lake City.

The VERSARE buses operated by ST would have looked like this vehicle, sans trolley poles.

Indeed, a VERY distinctive bus.........
