All:
Just looking at that vintage 1949 photo of MACKS on 125th St. makes me think of just what an important artery it (125th) has always been; multiple subway connections, and at one time, elevated connections and, of course, the TARS streetcars.
Remember too, until 1950, the busy 125th St. ferry to Edgewater, and the busy NYCRR/NH station (today's Metro North); also, until 1962, the Hudson River Day Line also docked at 125th ST.
And, until the early 1930's excursion steamers of the IRON STEAMBOAT COMPANY (to Coney Island) docked here as well.
Think of all the different types of buses that have run on this bustling thoroughfare, over the course of many decades.....

Though this vintage photo was not taken on 125th, it was too "classic" a "SURFACE" picture not to include here.......

*Note:
The 1955 date given for the photo is incorrect; the taxicab on the right dates to at least 1957 or 1958...........

In the days before buses ruled 125th St., vintage TARS streetcars such as this carried the masses; the car is seen passing underneath the 125th St. station of the 3rd Avenue El..........

There still is the only 'elevated' transit station left in Manhattan at Broadway.
And of course, the Metro North station at Park Avenue is 'elevated'.... |

I appreciate the compliment; I well recall tail finned autos like that taxi, when I was MUCH, MUCH younger....(!!)
As to the taxi, I was thinking of a Dodge, myself!
Vintage buses like those sure bring back great memories by the busload for yours truly.....

Tail-finned autos and Old Look buses will really date a vintage street scene; there is something so "classic" about such vintage "Made In America" vehicles.........

Though they erred on the date the pic was taken, as well as where (it was actually taken at 9th and 50th facing northwest, with Rt. 11 between 50th and 51st). |

W.B.:
It never ceases to amaze me as to how many vintage transit photos photos are either incorrectly dated, or give the wrong locations.
I have also seen many glaring errors in transit publications as well.
To many people (especially those who are not "experts" in the hobby), the info given is taken at face value only.
I know I've scratched my head at many photos, wondering if the captions were correct or not; with others, I simply thought that those who took and posted the photos knew more than I did.....

It makes you wonder, how inaccurate a lot of the other captions on that site, may be, as well......
But it still is a great source of historic photo's... |

traildriber:
Agreed, 100%.
I have found myself relying more and more on the experts here on the board, in most cases, regarding photo captions.
The ONLY ones I can be sure of myself are those photos that I PERSONALLY know to be accurate........
