Speaking of uses for transit cars...when I was a child, I attended the Pouch Scout Camp on Staten Island for an "overnite"....
They had a bunch of old elevated "gate cars", converted into cabins, for winter camping...I believe they are long gone...

traildriver:

Funny you mentioned this; several ex-B&QT PCC bodies were used for some years as "dormitories" at a day camp in Far Rockway.

I've also seen photos of ex-DC TRANSIT streetcar body shells (PCC's) being used at a playground, after the streetcars stopped running in January, 1962......

In Chicago, CHICAGO SURFACE LINES, upon the retirement of their trailer cars, utilized them as storage sheds, crew lounges, yard offices, etc.

In these capacities, the former trailers served until the end of streetcar service in Chicago, at several car houses.

The last Windy City cars ran in 1958...........

Another early example of "transit vehicle recycling":

For some years after WW2, and prior to the end of all streetcar service over the Brooklyn Bridge in 1950, this elderly convertible was used as a waiting shelter for passengers at Park Row.

After the 1944 demolition of the massive BMT elevated terminal at that location, the ground-level streetcar loops were then exposed to the elements; some sort of passenger waiting shelter was needed, if only of the "no frills" variety.

Note that the poles have been removed, and, also, the connection to the overhead wires for lights and heat.....

Here is a color photo of the same car in use as a waiting shelter; note that the photo caption is incorrect, as the car was situated at Park Row, on the Manhattan end of the BB......

The NYPD Highway Patrol, 3rd district, based along the Grand Central Parkway in Cunningham Park, has a retired RTS...don't know the number...

Just prior to the RTS, they had a Fishbowl donated by TCC. It was bus 744, but left the property around 9/11

What kind of bus does the Transit Police use these days?

Where is its "home base"?

Thanks.....
